I got a Ruger Hawkeye .358 and a Winchester 88 .308 Right now I have a 4x40 nikon on the .308. I may buy a Nikon 3x9x40 for the 88 and put the 4x40 on the new Hawkeye. Is this enough or too much power for the Hawkeye .358 ? I will use the rifle for bear over bait or wild boar.(most are running through the timber)

While a 3-9 scope is universal in popularity its magnification and size is a tiny bit on the high side for close range fast use. However it will work. The eye doctor fits us with glasses by asking YOU what you can see better with a or b?, 1 or 2? Indeed you need to look through the scopes yourself and find out whats ideal for you. Scopes in the 2-7 range or 2.5-8 are optimum. I got by with 4X for years in the woods when thats all there was. Get the 'power' or optic that your eye likes instead of what someone else says. When we go to the doctor they ask us what lens we like! Do that with your optics.
