For all who have hunted Namibia PG, did you have issues with sand getting in the barrel/ action with dust storms blowing? What's the best way to protect against this?

Same was we do in the western US when there is no snow - no oil on the gun. Run a patch through it each evening, and wipe dust out of the action as needed.

bt,

As Dan says keep the oil off the outside of the gun. Tape the end of the barrel to keep out dust/sand/bugs and clean the action and lube sparingly.

A small piece of electrical tape over the end of the barrel will also work for keeping dirt and rain out. I have experimented with and without the tape and have found no impact on accuracy or velocity. The tape is blown off well before the bullet gets to the muzzle. This is commonly seen in Canada and other hunting areas where moisture can get down a barrel. I see no reason why it would not work in Africa for dirt and sand.

Yes, keep the oil off the gun. I made the mistake last year of cleaning my gun one evening and forgeting to wipe the oil off the next morning, my gun got covered in dirt and dust.

Good Hunting,

I just bought a couple of light leather slip covers from Dick Murray that should work when the guns are on the vehicle racks. Going to Molokai on an Axis Deer hunt on the 15th. Let you know how they do.

That'll do the trick, no problems.

What about using miltech or eezox? Also, what about using grease as lube? I've had good results using super lube to grease my carry guns. (Brian Enos sells some interesting stuff.)

Tape the muzzle as was said above, put a DRY patch through the bore each night and leave your oil at home. For hunting purposes the oil rag that almost everyone has in their cleaning kit is plenty good to wipe off sweat at the end of the day.
For function, rifles do not need any lubrication except for a small amount of grease on the back of each locking lug to keep from galling. Unless you are storing it, oiling you rifle is akin to putting armorall on your truck tires.......

Keep oil out of the action and barrel and run a bore snake thorugh it once in awhile..If you must have something then powdered graphite works but its messy...

Wipe it off now and then with a cotton t-shirt or silcone gun cloth...I de-oil my guns during the hunting seasons and oil them when I store them..I check them each day for rust or whatever while hunting. I am more concerned in the cold temps than in the arid areas..A little dirt never hurt anything.

I had the powder fine dust rub the bluing off my rifle where it rubbed in the truck rack but that is the worst I ever had.
After I get the zero set I clean my rifle when I get home.

Try a product called Prolix.

Once applied it drys, dust does not stick to it.

Also, I use it in the barrel last, after cleaning with any solvent, and to clean the barrel after shooting on a several day hunt or dry the barrel out after getting wet.

I dry out the chamber and pass 2 or 3 dry patches through the bore and I have found that the first round out hits where it should.

Like others I place electrical tape over the muzzle.

As already wrote a little piece of electrical tape on the muzzle, oil and dry the action, but honestly speaking I did not find dust storms blowing in Namibia. Yes I saw dust clouds behind the bakkies on tarred roads, but even if I had a windy hunting an year ago, I never been in that dust storm situation.

You could use wax on the outside instead of oil. Here Johnson's Paste Wax has long been used on firearms !. A simple plastic bag will keep dust off also. Dry lubes such as graphite or molybdenum disulfide can be used on the inside.

I use the Birchwood Casey Sheath wipes that come in the little tear open individual packages. One lasts a couple of days and wipes the gun down very well. They are compact to pack and not messy. I also carry one of the original Otis kits in the small round nylon zip case. Just pull a patch thru the bore every couple of days and you're good to go.
