Not unless you tell them. I have never had anyone at JNB actually inspect my bags upon arrival. They will confiscate biltong upon your return to the US. Regards, Terry Msasi haogopi mwiba [A hunter is not afraid of thorns]

I brought over a few pounds of deer smoked sausages, some in my check in and some in my carry on, never a problem. Went through inspection....... Terry has it right about coming back to the US, they will take it, and they ask if you have any. I lady in front of me going through customs was very pissed when customs took 6 packages of "Kudu" biltong that she bought at JoBurg airport. "America's Meat - - - SPAM" As always, Good Hunting!!! Upon my return thru Atlanta, they actually had dogs sniffing the carry-on bags for food of those waiting on line to have their passports checked. I watched them confiscate several goodies from at least four people. -TONY Tony Mandile - Author "How To Hunt Coues Deer"

or you could put your biltong in a air tight sealed container swabbed with 70% rubbing alchol to rid it of any oils and scents on the out side.......wink wink.....

I took Slim Jims and butterscotch hardtack candy on the trip to Namibia in 2005. Really came in handy on the long days in the bush and when we went into a village. Everyone was very much appreciative for the snacks!! John

The JoBerg airport staff would be very excited to receive any MEAT product from any source. It is Africa, after all.

Had a group of Hungarians come into camp in Zim a couple of years ago and they had one FULL suitcase of homemade sausage and goodies. The sausage was the best I have EVER eaten. They even had one of the group prepare Goulash for the camp from game meat. He worked for half a day on it and it was superb. He was disappointed as he said they used hotter Paprika in Hungary. They knew how to eat and had some of the damdest good liquor I've had also. You had to have a drink with them for every animal they shot. GOOD people. They didn't speak English and no one in camp spoke Hungarian. Luckily one guy had his daughter with him and she spoke fluent English. Even when she wasn't around communication was not a problem. Incidentally she was one hell of a shot also. Last time I was there you could take biltong into Jo'burg if it was in commercially sealed packages and you could take it on the plane to US but I had to eat it before I got to US. It was good. I REALLY like biltong especially out of Reedbuck and Sable. SCI Life Member NRA Patron Life Member DRSS
