I love my 376! It is short and fast handling and I just proved that even with less than premium bullets it will kill a buff no problem. Loaded with good premium bullets it is as good as most anything out there. I like the prohunter version because of its size. It has a 20 inch barrell. It is easy to carry. It dosnt have much recoil once you get the stock to fit you. Unfortunately Steyr is not marketing this round/gun much if any. It is certainly every bit as good or better than the 9.3's and everyone is happy with them. You can load up any 375 cal bulletts you want. The problem at this point is because of lack of marketing ammo is not readily available if yours is "lost" by the airlines.

Bob,

Thanks for the pat on the head.

John Schaefer has been involved with Steyr-Mannlicher since before Day One on this rifle.

Eric Ching has written a couple of articles, here is one on his reloads with 300 grain bullets. Eric posts here too (Slingster).

John (?) Noveske a gunsmith in the NorthWest does a wildcat 416-cal based on the 300WSM case. Supposed to be a hum-dinger.

What am I missing here on the 376 Steyr?

I get 2400 fps with 300 gr. bullets with the ~24" barrel on the CZ 550 in 9.3x62.

A step down to ~2300 fps w/300 gr. bullets with the Steyr doesn't seem worth the effort!

DB,

Do you have any details on velocity and powder charge of the 416 x 300 WSM?

Also, does anyone make a 375 x 300 WSM wildcat?

Table is lifted from the Steyr Scout website. My 376 has the 20" barrel, so I guess you can add one or two RCH's of performance to the chart value.

Andy.....try out the Short Magnums forum in the "wildcat" section. John has built several 45-cal wildcats based on the 300WSM and at least 1 416-cal. Several others have built 375-calibers based on the 300WSM.

I dislike off-beat factory cartridges, and I have no use for wildcats whatsoever.

Since I'd rather not complicate my life any more than necessary, I'll stick with the regular old .375 H&H. I don't find it lacking in any way...........

Andy,

Jim Busha had two lines of "WSM" wildcats thkat predated Winchester. When they introduced the factory stuff, it dropped his business to zero within the year, and he is not selling his rifles now. He called them Heavy Express Magum and HE Short Action Magnum.

I think JudgeG has one of his .416s. I tested one of his .450s.

Jim's .416s data shows:

400 grain 2,300 fps in the .416 HESAM (2.06" case) 61 gr AAC 2520
400 grain 2,400 fps in the .416 HE Mag (2.25" case) 67 gr AAC 2520

These cartridges have a 46 degree shoulder angle.

He had similar cartridges in .375 as well.

I apparently don't have enough to keep me busy. Wanting to go to a short action .375 H&H wannabe.

Will, I thought you were more practical than that.

Or, are these two alternatives close enough to a 9.3x62 that it is basically a wash, or a waste of time?

You already know the answer to this one.

I think that quality cartridge would make the brass, if they don't already. they only need an order of a couple hundred I think the guy was telling me to do it, and I think that there are a couple of other guys on the board that have a 375 Taylor.

I have also heard good things about the 375x350rem.mag. Local shop built a couple on XP100's I think for Alaskan guides a while back, performed real well even with short barrels. but I think that they were using bullets under 300g.

The 375 Chatfield-Taylor (375/338) is great wildcat cartridge. I understand that the Quality Cartridge Co will make headstamped cases (see http://owlnet.com/quality/). The cases can be easily made by running 338WM cases over a 375 expanser ball. You can even pull the bullets on 338Wm factory ammo and seat anequivalent weight 375 bullet in a 375/338 seating die.

Although this great cartridge is a wildcat it can't be too obscure as it is listed in PO Ackley's Handbooks (Vol 2 page 213). There are a number of threads on this cartridge under "Wildcats" in this forum.

I have one on a Ruger M77 and my loads can be found at http://www.accuratereloading.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB53&Number=703304&page=1&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=21&fpart=all.

For what it's worth my Hornady handbook lists the
.376 Steyr with a 25 1/2" barrel and 300 grain bullets at 2,500'/sec using both IMR 4895 and BL-C2 powder.
