I have no use for them in the USA but see lots of people use them in Africa.

What do they do and who sells them?

Keeps seeds, dirt, sand, critters, etc... out of your boots/shoes in Africa

Marty - guess you are not doing much in shorts up your way this Winter, huh? I live in the mountains in New Mexico and it gets cold, but you guys have had it brutal. Is there such a thing as "full length" gaiter??

I pack two pair of Boyt gaiters on every safari. If one gets muddy, or I loose one, I have a spare.

Those from Courteney are the best looking (in my opinion) as they are made from skins but they tie at the top and don't seal out the seeds very well. Last June in Harare I picked up two pair at Feredays that are canvas and elastic at the top. Low priced and do the job very well.

The Kiwis use knee length gaitors. Here in SA I use the leather ones made by Rogue. They have elastic tops and are fastened at the back with studs and Velcro. Cool

I have some leather ankle high gaitors that I use in Africa every trip, The soft leather is quiet and I am a bow hunter so that is very important. I never wear them here in the states but in Africa where I have been there are these little grass burs, thorns, seeds that get in your socks and almost impossible to pick out so every time you wear them the itching and chaffing gets worst. Plenty of different brands out there,,, I wear them even when hunting with long pants to help keep the socks wearable,,

Full length gaiters are called waders. If you need those, you are fishing or hunting in Alaska.

I use gaiters most of the time hunting. My favorite boots are short and grass seeds somehow have a magnetic ability to get to my socks. I have fleece ones for early season elk, and a heavy pair by OR for snowy conditions. Soft leather would be nice, but I haven't seen any like that.

I got the Boyt ones for my wife and I to use in Namibia this July.

I just removed a pair of gaiters, having walked in the door from coyote hunting only 10 minutes or so ago. They are indispensable in the winter around here. Our snow is up to my crotch, and when I am snowshoeing...and especially when I am thrashing around in the snow after falling down!...gaiters are great to keep the snow out of your boots. They go from my instep all the way up to my knees...are those full-length? Smiler

I also wore the little Boyt gaiter-ettes in Africa. They seemed to work...I had no problems with anything getting into my shoes...but they got the wheels turning in my head. I now wear them, thoroughly soaked with Permethrin, for cutting the grass or other yardwork in the summer. We have some serious tick populations during the warm weather, and the insecticide-treated Boyts are the answer! I have considered also shaving my legs, the better to feel the odd tick that makes it up past the gaiters...but I haven't taken that step yet. Smiler

So what's up with Missouri...no snow? No ticks? Is the entire state paved?

Gaiters: they're not just for Africa anymore!

Not much snow.....and OFF deep woods formula stops ticks and chiggers

I have never seen a hunter anywhere in my life other than TV, magazines and the Internet wearing gaiters.

Hi Larry, sounds like the exact opposite of our situation. We have had much more snow than usual for the area, but the temperatures are only a bit lower than typical. As usual, our first snowflake fell in October...and the little sucker will still be sitting there in May! Smiler

Lots of gaiter wearers out West here where I live and hunt. Actually I wore gaiters on the AR Antelope Hunt in Wyoming last year when hunting with jwm above.

Some more sarcasm....you are proving yourself

I always poo-pooed the advantages and refused to wear them until this last year -- after all, I don't hunt in shorts. I wore a borrowed pair this year and will never hunt in Africa without them again for all of the reasons stated above.

TAG sells a nice pair of inexpensive canvas gaiters. And their Houston store is right up the road from me.
