Sometimes it feels a bit like a fart in a whirlwind, but the truth is that for every one negative story about hunting there are a hundred other positive stories that never get told. Last night the SCI Houston Chapter served a venison chili dinner to more than 300 homeless men at the Star of Hope Shelter. The venison was part of almost 300 pounds of venison hamburger donated to the Star of Hope. In addition, the Chapter donated $2500 to support the Star of Hope's mission. This is just one example of one group of hunters in one city . . . I am sure this happens in many places all throughout the year. I have said all along, we have a good story to tell, we just need to do a better job of telling it.

[Note: In the pictures you will not see any pictures of the Star of Hope clients. The Star of Hope does not allow photographs of the clients . . . they are at the mission to be helped not to be on display.]

Well done Mike!

LOL. Wisely, they do not trust us to do anything in the kitchen other than to serve.

Good stuff. I always find the service provided by food banks uplifting - no one should be hungry in America or anywhere else in the world.

I have always stated that the way the USA should help the less fortunate is through centers set up in every county seat with kitchens and infirnaries (staffed by legally immune nurse practitioners) to feed and nurse the less fortunate.

Hunters could easily supply a lot of the protein for such centers. Hunting orgs could certainly go a long way to helping their image by lobbying for and helping fund and stock such centers.

Really great story about what can be done.

With every good story however there is also a down side that has to be kept in mind.

Lora, my wife donates our small and medium chicken eggs to the look food bank and they are really appreciated.

A few days back we had some hunters from Michigan down for a deer hunt on my bosses property. They were hunting antlers and did not want the meat so they gave it to the boss.

He did not want all of the meat from the two deer the group killed, so Lora and I ended up with all 4 shoulders and 2 of the hams.

Lora began checking with the Food Bank and a local church offering to grind all the meat an donate it, but even in a town of 3500 in north Texas, no one really wanted to get involved because the meat was not inspected.

Many years back, and things may have changed since I heard about this, but Pennsylvania had shut down their Hunters For The Hungry program, because concern over the meat not being inspected, do not know if that is still the case or not, but it is a shame.

The good news on our situation is that Lora has contacted some families that do want the meat and it will go to them.

Congratulations and Thank You to the Houston SCI chapter and the Star of Hope for their efforts.

Thank You for posting that information MJines.

This, and hundreds of others like it, need to be posted on Facebook and every site possible on the net and never stop. No one can disagree with goos actions such as this. Are hunters unified enough to do the? (From the pissing matches here on AR I do wonder).
Cal.
