Opinion Time: What is the best African Hunting magazine for a person living in the U.S.? (I want to subscribe to something, not go to the newstand every month)

African Hunter Big Game Adventures S.C.I. Although not a magazine,The Hunting Report is a great source of information regarding the constant changes that occur in hunting in foreign countries. I have to agree with Kathi about Big Game Adventures. I haven't bought an African Hunte as I thought the price was too steep. SCI is also one I look forward too. The new Sports Afield is also great. "There are worse memorials to a life well-lived than a pair of elephant tusks." Robert Ruark

Ditto on what Kathi has said. However, I'd also add Sports Afield. BillQ

The only reason I maintain my subscription to BGA is the African content (and the sheep hunting articles). Otherwise, I wouldn't be able to overlook all the penned elk hunt stories. Canuck

Paul, Do consider "Magnum" from Durban. You can PM me for details if wanted. An old man sleeps with his conscience, a young man sleeps with his dreams.

I´d say Magnum. It´s more "down to Earth" and not just filled with "fabulous tales and hero pics".

I do have a copy of Magnum that the outfitter gave me when I was in Africa. I just wanted to see what all of the good options were before deciding what to subscribe to. Thanks again to all for responding.

One good thing about the African Hunting magazine is, it is printed in Dallas,Texas now, so delivery is much more reliable, than most that come from Africa! It is still written, and edited in Zimbabwe, but simply printed, and distributed in the US! ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

"I´d say Magnum. It´s more "down to Earth" and not just filled with "fabulous tales and hero pics"." My problem with Magnum is that the primary focus is on guns and ammo, and not hunting. That would be OK by me if such a great number of its guns and ammo articles weren't mostly about personal defense. That said, Magnum has a stable of regular writers who have been there and done that, and know whereby they speak. I just wish they would write more articles on hunting African game outside South Africa. BillQ

I think Magnum got its primary start from covering guns and ammo, and it has been with some reluctance on the readerships' part of including as much hunting as they do. I spend more time every month reading Magnum than any other magazine, even if part of it is always in Afrikaan! They've published my stuff before about hunting in Zim anyway. I don't think they try to market themselves as a world wide hunting magazine. They have bunches of problems in SA with the gun control fascists and it stands to reason that Magnum would continually address these issues. They also praise the NRA and wish, finally after much idealistic nonsense, they would have woke up to see the light way before now. ------------------------------- Will Stewart / Once you've been amongst them, there is no such thing as too much gun. --------------------------------------- and, God Bless John Wayne. Will: A South African diplomat named Victor (I can't remember how to spell his surname. It sounds like Zaz-aray) was my guest at the Lander One Shot Antelope Hunt in Wyoming a couple of years before the 1994 election. Victor claimed he was one of Magnum's first investors. The concept for its format at its launch was to make it the "Argosy" or "True" of Africa, with guns and adventure stories, he told me. Its original name was Man (in big type) Magnum (in smaller type). BillQ

I feel compeled to speak up in defense of Magnum magazine. As for it's focus, I do not feel it is any more (or less) varied than typical Hunting/gun magazines. All such periodicals carry articles on both hunting and the tools used to do it. Some issues do have more "gun stuff" but some have more hunting articles as well. There is a definate slant towards and considerable space given to the gun problems in S.A., but after all it IS a South African magazine! As for articles on other countries, I see that to, recently there have been stories on west Africa, and Zim, Namibia and Botswana are regularly covered. Interestingly, I believe their "gun writer" John Scarlata is based in the states! I find Magnum to offer the sort of fresh, unpretentious coverage I got from my great-uncle's handed down Outdoor life, Sports Afield and Field & Streams back in the sixties. Quite a break from the typical U.S. offerings which I find little more than over stated endorsements for advertisers. Sorry guys, just my personal opinion. Oupa, I don't know where you got the idea that you need to defend Magnum magazine! I think it is a great rag and have subscribed for many years. ------------------------------- Will Stewart / Once you've been amongst them, there is no such thing as too much gun. --------------------------------------- and, God Bless John Wayne. BTW - 2006 is Magnum's 30th birthday! They are celebrating by reprinting a number of articles from the seventies and eighties that are pure reading pleasure to anyone interested in "outdoors Africa." An old man sleeps with his conscience, a young man sleeps with his dreams.

Oupa, I have here (Bariloche, Argentine Patagonia) a Magnum magazine, August 1996. This number was dedicated mainly to the .375 H & H. I think it is a very good publication. Have Magnum magazine any web site? Thanks, PH
