Safari-HuntDifficult choice, I would say that you either had to do both the same in other words have both of them in a mount or both in a rug. Otherwise you will miss on seeing the difference between the two species and you would end up with two zebras instead of two species of zebra.

Die Ou JagterBlair, mine is 1 Mt rug and 1 Mt ped and 1 B Ped drinking. I also had one Mt ruined so just using pieces for things like hat bands, boot tops etc.

DesertRamI have one mountain zebra as a rug. I really enjoy the rug, but part of me wishes I had done a pedestal mount and waited for a Burchell's for the rug. The other part of me wants to go back to Namibia for a giraffe and another mountain zebra to mount as on a pedestal!

Larry SellersI have a Burchells as a pedestal and the Hartmanns as a rug. I think I will now try for another Hartmanns and pedestal it and go for another Burchells and rug it. That way I have one of each in both configurations. The best of both as I see it.

L. David KeithI'm with Larry S. on this one. All Zebra's usually look great mounted or rugged. But IMHO, the Burchell's makes a better shoulder mount, and the clean stripes of the other species tend to look best as a rug. But that's what makes the world go 'round: we all have different views of what beauty is!

BlankOne of each done as rugs, in two different trophy rooms. No need for any more, as there are too many other trophies to spend my money on.
I love to stalk them, tho, so pictures galore still to come!

Bill CWeird, I was just looking at my rug this morning thinking that a zebra rug is one of the must-haves for any trophy room, and that a second one is perfect for a shoulder mount plus the rest of the tanned hide for pillows.
I have all "Burchell's'", but a mountain zebra would be an ideal for a shoulder given their unique structure, and the Burchell's for a rug as the shadow stripes add depth (exactly the opposite thinking of LDK!).
Somebody on the forum at one time posted a pict of a beautiful rug on a backing, it might have been Terry Carr or Jerry H.

D99Mountain zebras haave a beautiful coat but the damn things have a dewlap like an eland.
They make ugly shoulder mounts.

Michael RobinsonZebra make the best rugs. You are correct in that you need two. One plains and one mountain.
Then get two additional rugs for when and if the first two wear out. They are tough, but they do wear out.
I have never really liked zebra head and shoulder mounts.
They look too much like horses for my tastes - although Roy Rogers did have a full body mount of his horse Trigger and it turned out pretty well.

graybirdThanks for the replies thus far.
I find myself flip flopping on a consistant basis with this question.
There is just something about a zebra rug that just screams AFRICA! After the post in the Taxidermy forum regarding the giraffe rug. I thought there are probably no two things that mean Africa then the giraffe and zebra, IMHO. Hence, I thought a rug from each might fit the bill.
However, I think that there are two pedestal mounts that are extremely eligant. A well crafted zebra pedestal and a sable pedestal. My wife thinks a rug would be best and she likes them overall better then the pedestals. Believe me, I think she gets tired of me showing her different zebra pedestals.
Guess I still might have a decision to make in the future!

Die Ou JagterIf I knew how to attach a link I would but if you go the the Trophy Room current page 4 you will see one of my Zebra ped mounts drinking and if I must say so myself I think it is very nice (my design) and unique.
As an aside to this discussion has any one ever noticed that a Zebra will be left or right (handed) this is very noticable on old stallions.

What is nice about the leather is it will not "curl" as my felt backing does.

Die Ou JagterIt is a personal thing but I prefer the legs left on, only removing the hoof. I also had mine trimed in leather and no backing. Having the rug on a hard surface the ones with felt backing can break your Fing neck, eh.

jstevensFor some reason, I like a pedestal mount better than a standard shoulder mount for a zebra. The rug is still an african classic mount, so that is what I did as I am somewhat traditional.

You are correct my friend. I should have said pedestal mount instead of shoulder mount. When starting the thread, I was thinking pedestal the entire time, but for some reason I typed shoulder mount.

D99 touched on the best reason to shoulder or pedestal mount a Hartmann's. The dewlap on the Hartmann's along withi ts striping and feet make it unique among the Zebras and a rug kind of doesn't do it justice.
I do think everybody should have a zebra rug though and Jerry Huffaker is a master at doing them with the leather trim. We walk on ours everyday and it may loose its hair eventually but then I'll have an excuse to take another.
