Looking at the taylor ko tables at beartooth website 30/06-21 338-32 375-39 416-57 45/70-46. Can the 45/70 be considered for use in Africa. Alot being said about this old soldier with hard cast bullets , some companies say it will pass clear through a cape buffalo.

This subject has been beaten to death, but I'll say it again, a 45-70 "WILL" kill Cape Buffalo, butttttttttt, it is "NOT" a Cape Buffalo cartridge, PERIOD! ------------------

MacD37, Obviously, you do not have a sense of adventure. Neither would I. ------------------ www.accuratereloading.com

You can kill a cape buff with a 22 hornet and a 55 gr fmj, or a use a 700 NE and a 1000 gr bullet. The key is knowing the limitation of the round, and shooting within those limitations. The 45-70 has limitations, if you're willing to live within them, then it can be used, and effectively. Many folks aren't willing to live within the limitations of the round, and won't use it. Despite whatever calculations folks make, the 45-70 is not the equal of a true big bore African round, never has been, never will be.

HI, Let me say a lot of the topics on this site I know nothing, on this topic I do know something. I have had a 50 Alaska and now I am moving up to a 50-110 in a win86. Why am I going from a 50 Alaska to a 50-110,they shoot the same .510 bullet,525 grain weight. The 50-110 case is 2.4 as the 50AK is 2.1 larger size more powder more power. The 50-110 I will get a 525 grain at around 2,200fps,the bottom line was the 50AK was not strong enough for BUFF and it is far stronger than a 4570,would it have worked I am sure, but I would not have bet my life on it. I have never hunted in Africa, so I learned a lot from this site,at first I said that they just did not like levers, but the true is the big game in Africa have thicker skin and are bigger and stronger than NA,Thanks,Kev
