Giraffe slaughtered for food 04/05/2009 22:07 - (SA) Johannesburg - Eight people appeared in a South African court on Monday accused of having stolen a giraffe from a game reserve and slaughtered it for food. "They stole the giraffe for meat consumption because when police arrested them they were preparing to eat it," the SAPA news agency quoted police spokesperson Alpheus Mokale as saying. The eight appeared in the Letsitele Magistrate's Court in the rural northern province of Limpopo, home to several game reserves including the country's top wildlife destination Kruger National Park. While not one of Africa's big five (lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino) adult male giraffes can weigh up to 1 200 kilograms.
