I've heard good things about them when you have to make a layover in Joburg. This year, I know I'll have to layover at least one time, maybe more (I'm making connections there three different times), and will be traveling with my guns. I may also have to layover in Windhoek. Where would you stay there.

You will be more than pleased with the services of the Afton House. Louie, his wife and daughter (maybe even his P.H. son-in-law) will all be ready to help you with any request. They will have someone meet you at customs, help with gun paperwork, if necessary, take you to their place by van.. transport you to a great place to eat (several choices), put you to bed in a clean room with your own bath, feed you a great breakfast.. take you to the mall if you wish.. and get you to the airport on time... all for a very, very cheap price and a smile. There are patios on which to sit and read.. or enjoy a cigar. They have a toddy in the evening if you wish... And, no telling with whom you'll get to chat. I spent an evening with John Barsness and Dave Scovill talking about doubles and black powder lever actions... I imagine as good of safari stories as told, nowdays, in Africa get told at breakfast in the Afton House. They even have a great dog who likes to sit by you while you read, and occasionally he'll knudge you to make you scratch his head. I'll be back!

GAHUNTER, I have done the airport hotel thing and Afton House (on our last two trips). Afton House is the only way to go. We are treated as friends by Louie and Annelise. I will never stay anywhere else but at Afton. Regards, Terry

I stayed at the Afton House In Oct in part because of previous recommendations by Judge and Terry, and I could not have been happier. All they said is true. It's maybe 10-minutes from the airport in a quite neighborhood. There's a pool in the back yard with a nice sitting area that they were just opening for their summer (cold in July though), the yellow lab loves to play fetch, the rooms are nice with neat African-made furniture, the rusks are awesome, there is a small "library" in their living room which is always open to visitors with hunting magazines and books of interest, it's pretty cheap compared to hotel pricing, and one is indeed treated with hospitality the likes of which I have never seen here in the States. I'm not the "chatty type", but felt right at home there. On my trip back through Joburg, the SAA flight was delayed which meant a long day in the airport. I called Louis and he and his son-in law were there in 15-minutes and I spent the day visiting with them. If I had any problems with the firearms transport in Joburg, I am confident Louis would have been able to take care of it. I think it's valuable to have a contact person in Joburg just in case. If you have not already seen it, their website is at: Afton House Bill

I've also stayed there, and what others have said I'll echo, in spades. The other benefit of staying there is that Louie has all kinds of contacts at the airport and he will get your guns processed and you though Customs in record time. That, to me, was worth the price of the room--which was reasonable, anyway.
