Craig B hit a little on references, I'd like to expand a bit. The important thing about references is not necessarily if the client is happy or not, rather, ask him how the hunt went. I usually like to know if the PH was an early riser, how well he seemed to know the area. Is the PH chatty, moody, etc. How does he treat the trackers. Is he a pressure inducer (ie SHOOT SHOOT SHOOT). You get the idea. Try to find out if the hunt will make you happy! As for back up shots, hearing two shots ring out as one is unprofessional in my opinion. But a PH is responsible to ensure that dangerous game doesn't become a hazard to others. The other thing I find helpful is to prioritize your hunt. If you would die leaving Africa without a mountain zebra, make sure your guide knows this, he will make sure it is his priority too. There is nothing worse spending 5 days in the lowlands looking for the perfect Kudu when what you wanted was a mtn zebra. John | |||
