Has Kenya lifted its ban on sport hunting? If not what is the likelihood of this happening? John Illegitimi non carborundum SCI Life Member Dallas Safari Club Life Member NRA Endowment Life Member

The ban is still in effect, I doubt it will ever be lifted. Too many foreign animal rights groups have their hooks into them.

I think they were thinking about reopening it again if they can get the Tsavo lions back!

It doesn't look good right now. I am on top of it for the most part as I would like to have a concession there if ever possible. Ray Atkinson Atkinson Hunting Adventures 10 Ward Lane, Filer, Idaho, 83328 208-731-4120 rayatkinsonhunting@gmail.com

I haven't posted much, but read the forums fairly often. I served on an SCI committee 3 years ago and substantial effort was put into opening the door to hunting in Kenya. SCI and their partners funded trips for Kenyan government officials to visit Zimbabwe and other countries in Africa to show them the benefits to the rural communities. We even got as far as having a bill passed that would in effect legalise hunting. The President Mwai kibaki vetoed the bill at the last moment. There is a great deal of ground root support in Kenya for the re introduction of hunting, the press whoever where exceedingly biased and negative. We suspect that the WWF and other anti hunting organisations had a quiet word with the President and threatened withdrawal of aid.

Not the WWF. They are pro-hunting. They support hunting operations in communal conservancies in Namibia. They may look like a bunny-huggin' organization from the outside, but they sort of have their heads screwed on right. I do believe that you are right though, other anti-hunting organizations probably made a donation to his favorite charity. The "I-need-money-to-change-my-mind" charity. It is a very popular charity in Africa ...

Thanks for the correction Wendell, Yhe project is not dead yet just on the back burner. It was a fascinating insight into the machinations of Kenyan politics. Technically no law was ever passed to end hunting in Kenya. The proposed plan called for the de centralisation of the game department which would greatly benefit the watu in the hunting areas. Obviously Nairobi wasn't going to buy that! Remove a ready source of income for the politicians and give it to the local communities? It was a bit naive.
