Got this from Ganyana. Dangerous game hunting at its best. A sequence of photo’s showing two Zimbabwe parks officers and two rangers shooting a buffalo for rations. One is armed with a .375, the old sergeant with an F.N. When the buff turned to charge after taking a few hits the one “officer†turned and fled in some style.       | ||

That guy looks like he is trying to fly out of there...so this is what goes on behind us when we are shooting! Who stood his ground, the old sergeant? And that is a great sequence of pictures...taken from across the dry river bed   | |||

Wow! Would they shoot a bull as standard procedure or go for whatever comes up? Or IS there a standard procedure as what to shoot for rations? | |||

Just goes to prove that the only way to stop a charging buffalo is to brain it! I suppose when your are running scared it is difficult to shoot straight! | |||

I believe the guys doing all the running are the parks officers (desk jockeys) while the shooting is coming from the ranger sergeant. Although one of the rangers seems to have completely disappeared from the last few photos. Regards, Terry | |||

Asside from the whole thing being unnecessary and a very true portrait of many of the new generation parks "officers" (they sit in an 'office' and are called 'Sir') what is interesting is the speed at which things went wrong. Look at the dust in photo 3. It is from a miss by the officer with the .375 that prompted the charge. Sergent Chingoma is running to the right but at the same time pumping that buff full of holes with his F.N. as every body else flees the charge. In photo 4 taken less than 2 seconds later - the buff is turning to follow the running officer. Again look at the progress of the dust cloud - there was a gentle breese blowing. From begining to end of that photo sequence is about 5 seconds - the dust has just moved past the tree - Chingoma had fired 20 rounds and is standing reloading in the last photo. | |||

No, that is Charara on the edge of lake Kariba. the building visible in the back ground is the back end of one of the tourist lodges. | |||

From what I can see, I'd say: "Hats off to the old sergeant!" He, armed with a FN [for those very few that do not know, a F.N. is basically military rifle in 7.62 NATO, or better known as .308 win. It is normally a semiautomatic with a 20 round magazine.] stood his ground and kept shooting. He did move [probably very fast!] to his right at some time, but in all the photos he is at least pointing his rifle at the buff. IMHO the old sergeant killed the charging buff with a .308 win! No doubt he knows that FN well. At the least I'd say this isn't the first time he's faced danger and won.  An old man sleeps with his conscience, a young man sleeps with his dreams. | |||
