Extra bags on SSA -- how much?

I've been asked to take a suitcase full of medical supplies to Zimbabwe to a missionary our church is sponsoring. He will meet me at the plane in Bulawayo to take possession.

The problem is this MAY cause me to have to check an extra bag. At the very least, I will be overweight on my main bag.

Which is the best way to go and how much is it going to cost me? (There's no way I'm going to charge the church for this, so whatever it is, I'll have to eat it)

SAA's website says excess baggage from the US to Jo'burg is $125.00 USD. From JNB to Bulawayo it is 23.00 Rand (I assume they mean per kilo) so a 30Kg bag would be about $110.00 USD.

Regards,

Terry

GAHUNTER,

I checked an extra bag from SA to the US last summer, which cost 750 Rand equalling right around $130 if I remember correctly.

Actually, their website is confusing. But the best I can figure, it will cost me about $230 one way.

I'll just chalk that up to good will with the man upstairs. Unfortunately, that account is way in arrears and this hardly make a dent in what I owe. Smiler

Get a letter on church stationery stating that you are carrying donated medical supplies. Chances are good that the additional charges will be waived.

If not, and no matter what the cost, get a receipt. That could be a tax-deductible donation.

I took an extra bag from ATL to ZIM last year, and it cost me $140 total. Then I left the suitcase with the camp cook and he thought it was really cool to have a place to lock his stuff.
