I used PMP Ammo to get my Gemsbuck. This is the ammo the PH had for the 30-06 I borrowed over there.

No complaints, it did the job. The rifle I used shot it quite well. I just can't seem to find any info about the ammo.

It's probably not too expensive but all the PHs seem to like it fine for plainsgame. Anybody else have experience with it? Or any more info on it?

Note: I've edited the original post of this thread to use PMP instead of my earlier mistaken PNP. There's enough good info developing in this thread, it'd be a shame if someone couldn't find it with a search because of a spelling mistake.

PMP ammo very common around SA, reasonably priced - as it is locally manufactured - and does the job without too much fuss.

Off the DENEL (holding company) website ...

"PMP manufactures an extensive range of ammunition and related items for military, commercial and industrial applications, as well as consumable products for the motor and mining industry. PMP's product range includes small arms ammunition (9mm to 12,7mm) and medium calibre (20mm to 35mm), sporting ammunition, detonators and percussion caps, mechanical fuzes, power cartridges, and quality ammunition components and brass products to the ammunition industry.

Thank you for correcting my mistake.

It's PMP not PNP. I feel like a homer

I see that the initials stand for Pretoria Metal Pressings.

I've edited the originating post to reflect this.

Big guy, PMP is readily available in the States in fact usually even cheaper than it is in S.A. where its made! Try the larger ammo & gear dealers like Midway, Natchez, etc.

I shot PMP ProAmm bullets for a while, primarily because of general availability and low price - neither is very obvious in Switzerland. I also saw a bullet test where the ProAmm seemed to do well in terms of expansion and weight retention.

The bullets worked fine on the game I took with them, no complaints. Accuracy was not outstanding in my rifles, and I have later switched to other bullet designs giving me better accuracy - not sure the animals greatly care, though.

At one stage, I bought a bunch of PMP .223 Rem cases to load for a friend of mine. The cases were positively dismal in quality. Some of these, presumably non-military cases, had crimped primer pockets, and seating force required varied wildly. Needless to say, results were at best questionable. We fixed the problem using Lapua cases, and got wonderful accuracy.

PMP cases are often much thicker walled than brands like Win or Rem. I found them to be quite long lasting in my .30-06.
It appears people who load higher pressure cartridges, want max velocities or those with compromised capacity like the .458 Win prefer imports so as to have max case capacities.

PMP bullets, in moderate velocity calibres are just fine, especially heavier weights and I have used plenty 180/220 gr with no hassle and have had friends use them in calibre from .243/.270/.308/.303/.30-06 up to .375 with no hassle, don't expect it to be an A-Frame, its not, but I have had factory 220grs drill lengthways through impala and my boss cleanly take a giraffe in the heart with one- good mushroom and minimal weight loss...

I like the brass from PMP for reloading. However I find the factory ammo to be of low quality and I no longer use it. I did buy it in the past before I reloaded ammo because of the great price you can get it for.

I've had the pleasure of touring the PMP plants twice. Also used their ammo on game.

Their dual core Pro Am bullets are quite good, but I found their standard soft points to be very soft.

Excellent velocities and groups with both.

I used some 30-06 PMP ammo a couple of years ago on Whitetails. Two were clean one shot kills; one exploded with no penetration, requiring a second shot that penetrated completely. They were very accurate, but I would not recommend them.
