for everybody going over - if you're in a tick area bring some flea and tick shampoo along. quick shower with it takes care of them quick

Another way to get rid of tics is to put liquid dish soap on them. They cannot breath, and they back out.

BTW, the ticks this year in KZN and Limpopo are particularly abundant this year, esp so in KZN coastal areas.

Permethrin-based clothing treatments go a long way from having the buggers latch on and most clothing treatments last through a few washings.

Tick Fever, or Tick Bourne Fever, is a nasty thing. Three of four clients got it in the last 14 days. I offered them the use of the permethrin stuff, they declined as "we never have had a problem with them." Now they are on a two week program of cipro.

The Permethrin products work. Haven't found a tick on my body after i started using it during spring turkey season. I did watch one crawl about six inches on my pants before he fell over dead.

i just learned something (maybe) bug dope guy at the sportshop told me that deet breaks down after a few hours thats why they tell you to keep putting it on, but what they don't tell you is that when it breaks down it turns into a sugar. the permethrin type product ultra-thon is much better. i'll find out in about a month

DEET is only designed to mask the CO2 that your body emits. Permethrin is an insecticide. It is the chemical that is added to the shampoo people use to kill head lice. The theory is the tick will be killed before it is able to make it to an opening in your clothing, like your cuffs. That is why they tell you to apply it more liberally in those areas.

I read some info where they are pretreating military uniforms with this stuff.

I have been checking the weather in the limpopo and it 35 in the mornings and 50 / 60s in the afternoon.

Shouldnt the ticks be dormant?

I have walked in the foot prints of the elephant, listened to lion roar and met the buffalo on his turf. I shall never be the same.

No better advice could be given. Although I recommend a strong regimen to clients, nothing I have found beats Permanone. It KILLS any tick or mosquito that comes in contact with it. Like Don, I've already had clients that didn't heed advice and contracted Tick Fever. Best not be sleeping on this one!

TH, I just returned from KZN and Limpopo and surrounding areas. No ticks on me, because I sprayed down with Permanone (the right brand). However, the days were warm to hot and ticks were on the prowl. They generally are. It's not worth the risk, and $5.99 is cheap insurance.

One learns a bit ecery day!Big Grin

Here we have two Hunting Booking Agents posting about preventing tick bites: One recommends permethrin to clients. A few fellow posters support this recommendation. Then the next Booking Agent quotes him, compliments the advice as good, and mentions Permanone, which he says is unbeaten? bewildered Wonder who is actually correct? What will the other Booking Agents say? Whose advice do I heed and what do I tell my own clients? homer Better find out more about these things! shame

A very short Google search taught me that the two products are the same: Permanone is just a trade name for a range of products that contain permethrin! No conflict at all! Learned a small bit again: Permethrin and Permanone is the same! Good advice by both Booking Agents! dancing

In good hunting.
