SCI gets bashed a hell of a lot herein. An awful lot of it, they deserve in my opinion.

On the other hand, they do a lot of good at times. Sometimes we hear nothing about it. I am going to tell you all about one of those times.

After Cyclone Kenneth in Mozambique, the SCIF sent over relief supplies. There were 34,000 meals in the initial shipment along with clothing, knives and fishing gear. There was an additional 14,000 meals in the second shipment. The meals were designed with certain vitamins, minerals and calcium and the distribution targeted children in the affected areas.

Now, to be clear, I still hate the awards and a lot of things like that. However, I have to say well done to SCI on the relief efforts.

Larry,

Thanks for the information about the relief effort. I was unaware, as I am no longer a member.

In my view, the good far outweighs the bad.

The bad is mostly driven by egos out of control.

The good is this kind of thing, to which I say, bravo!

This makes me happy to be a life member. Thanks, Larry, for sharing this news.

I think the blame for this should be squarely on SCI shoulders.

Their flagship annual convention is centered around the silly awards, which are giving it a bad name.

SCI should have a very prominent section right on the opening page of their website where they should list all the good deeds they do.

One should not have to dig for it.

The difference between activists and hunters - and I'm being global when I say hunters, not just SCI - is that activists look after the crooks in capitol city head offices, and hunters look after villagers on the ground, and they are the key to conserving wild species.

Here is another service to the hunting community that SCI offers that should go to everyone that hunts Africa-
I am now writing my Representative and I ask that every one of you do the same as we can possibly STOP this crazy legislation.
I have written an expose' for my Cruise Log fans that supports hunting in Africa...and you would be surprised how many POSITIVE comments I have received....WOW, Never thought of Hunting that way!! I will post here with my email to my Representative shortly.

Urgent: Contact Your Representative in the U.S. House

Oppose the Anti-Hunting Buchanan Amendment

Last night the House Rules Committee allowed an amendment offered by Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-FL) to the "minibus" appropriations spending bill, H.R. 3055, to proceed to a vote by the full House of Representatives later this week or next.

Buchanan and other anti-hunting House members have hatched this last-minute backroom deal to end the importation of sport-hunted elephant and lion trophies from the African nations of Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

The Buchanan Amendment flies in the face of logic, conservation science, the conclusions of wildlife biologists, international experts, and the wishes of African wildlife managers.

Congress should not approve restrictions making it impossible for U.S. international hunters to participate in a proven and crucially important strategy for wildlife conservation.

You can help. Please call your Representative in the U.S. House NOW and urge them to OPPOSE THE BUCHANAN AMENDMENT.

The Capitol switchboard is 202-224-3121. Or, click here to send a direct written appeal.

Call or click today! Make sure your U.S. House member knows that, as a hunter, you oppose the Buchanan Amendment because any restriction on hunting programs in Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe will only harm, not protect, lions and elephants.

If Congress is serious about protecting wildlife in Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe then they must not ignore the abundance of scientific evidence that highlights the clear positive relationship between big game hunting and successful conservation efforts.

The Buchanan Amendment's ban on elephant and lion imports from these countries would be detrimental to their conservation efforts and harmful to these species. If Congress truly wants to help wildlife, then they should leave management decisions to African wildlife experts.

Here is my Email to Representative Kilmer-
I did a FORWARD of the SCI email and added this, including my expose. Please feel free to cut and paste this into your own email to your US Congressman. Note this was a REPUBLICAN bill too....obviously Buchannan is not educated on Wildlife and Africa game management.

Dear Representative Kilmer,
I am contacting you to OPPOSE the "minibus" amendment to HR 3055 as it is HUNTERS of the world who provide the money to outfitters to do 24-7-365 anti poaching in African communities by engaging tribal members in the process to protect their crops, people and communities.
I have hunted and toured in Africa since 1978 on 19 different hunting safaris and 14 trips to the continent. I can tell you first hand that WITHOUT HUNTING poaching runs rampant and is a scourge on wildlife. That is why the executive orders and laws placed by the Obama administration to STOP imports of Lion and Elephant trophies from Tanzania and Zimbabwe is DETRIMENTAL to wildlife.
Please read my expose' below that I have written to 150 readers of our Cruise Logs, this one written in February as we were cruising the coast of Africa on SEABOURN SOJOURN from Seychelles, to Tanzania, Zanzibar, Madagascar, Mozambique and 5 ports in South Africa....and as we were preparing to hunt on the East Cape of South Africa after disembarkation. This message was VERY WELL received by my readership....and it TRUE based on experience. The knee jerk laws that have been passed recently are NOT based on Scientific evidence, but "feel good" legislation that is HARMFUL TO WILDLIFE AND TRIBAL COMMUNITIES IN AFRICA.
Please take my comments seriously, they are made based on 45 years of hunting and traveling to Africa....and understanding the Science and life in Africa-

By Steven Shull- February 2019:

HUNTERS vs POACHERS

We are in Africa and experiencing how Africans live…and what dangers they face every day that most of the other civilized world doesn’t!! I would like to share some perspective with you that perhaps you have hot thought about. Life-Poaching- and how Hunting curbs/prevents poaching.
African tribal people face dangers from the Dangerous 7 animals on a daily basis- Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Cape Buffalo, Rhino (Big 5) and Crocodile and Hippopotamus. Africans eat a tremendous amount of meat daily, combined with either corn maze or rice…maybe ONE POUND a Day…they poach wild game for survival, they also must protect their cotton and corn crops and their domestic animals from the dangers of these animals. Criminal poachers kill all wildlife species for bush meat sold in local markets, and also by commercial entities to feed bush crews …yes this illegal. Governments of Africa do NOT have funding to protect animals!!
Enter Hunting- if professional hunting companies operate in these tribal communities, they hire tribal people to work in Safari camps, cooks, waiters, skinners, trackers, gun bearers, camp fires, laundry, etc. Tribal communities also share in the concession fees and the trophy fees paid by hunters to harvest…BIG OLD, NON-PRODUCTIVE MALES from the herds…look at this as a renewable resource being scientifically monitored and managed-carried out by hunters, guided by Professional Hunters. Now given that, to also protect the ENTIRE Concession area that is leased from the governments, the Hunting Company also hires and trains scouts to do 24hr/7day/365 per year…ANTI POACHING Patrols to STOP POACHING!!! This is extremely effective putting an economic value on all animals that tribal people then protect, further, tribal members do NOT have to risk facing the old beasts that have become man eaters, or crop raiders…the Hunters pay big money to take that dangerous responsibility… and then ALL of the meat from the hunting camp, short of a few tenderloins of rump roasts, go to the Tribal communities that surround the Hunting concessions. This is a Win-Win for wildlife and the tribes of Africa…WITHOUT HUNTING, YOU HAVE POACHING…KENYA IS A GOOD EXAMPLE OF THIS, THEY STOPPED HUNTING IN 1974…AND THE COUNTRY IS DEVOID OF WILD ANIMALS ACROSS THIS BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY!!
Sadly, without scientific and complete understanding of the impact that the United States has on other Countries by knee jerk legislation….Pres Obama, with a stroke of his pen, stopped the import of some of the Big 5 animal trophies…this has resulted in many of the premier- 50 year old companies, example in Tanzania, to throw in the towel and give up their hunting blocks…one company, who spent $3 million over the last 10 years in the Selous Game Reserve on ANTI POACHING…just turned in 40 blocks. If they cannot sell hunts and hunters can’t import trophies…they are out of business…THE ANIMALS OF AFRICA SUFFER BY US PRESIDENTIAL ACTIONS….TRIBES SUFFER…AND THEY WILL START POACHING TO PROTECT THEMSELVES, THEIR CROPS AND DOMESTIC ANIMALS…AND JUST TO SURVIVE… Trust me, China is now rapidly exploiting Africa’s wealth in minerals…mining is big business…and the workers must eat….this is my prediction, historical famous game reserves in Africa will be extinct in less than 10 years!! Glad I am old…this is the sunset on Africa…and its generous wildlife species. Again, governments don’t have the money to prevent poaching…they make a feeble effort and fail!!
I hope this will give you a bit of a different perspective over the Bias media and bleeding hearts perspective on a country they will NEVER see or experience!! We have enjoyed 40 years of travel to Africa…and we have seen GAME THRIVE!! I really don’t know how to change the PC grip on our Politicians today. They haven’t enjoyed Africa, they don’t care…it just feels good!! Africa Suffers!!

Since I have written this message, the Pasinisi family, largest outfitter in Tanzania has abandoned 44 hunting blocks they have successfully managed for over 40 years....these will now most likely go back to farming and livestock and the wildlife will be "removed" forever...never to be returned.

Please take my comments seriously, and PLEASE vote AGAINST HR 3055, and also take positive steps on restoring proper hunting trophy imports into the United States, until constructive SCIENTIFIC evidence dictates that HUNTING is detrimental. It is NOT....it is a very positive factor in proper wildlife management and PROTECTING wildlife from illegal poaching.

Best Regards,

Note to my CC's: Please contact your individual US Representatives to oppose HR 3055. Feel free to cut and paste my expose, and I would include the SCI email as well. SS

Whilst 470EDDY's expose' is 100% correct and +1 for the effort, I sadly doubt that it will see the light of day as our politicians, by and large, are more interested in holding their calloused backsides firmly stuck to the seat they occupy or even upgrade to a more comfortable one.
Their aim therefore will be to choose the side which will more likely garner them the desired votes and thus adopt a "politically correct" response to the article in question.
