Is a peep on a DGR a good or bad Idea?
Is a ghost ring better than a peep or is it the same thing?
Is the express sight superior to the peep on the DGR?

Aaron,
I think a Ghost-Ring sight is a very fast and effective tool for hunting dangerous game. In no time, you'll just place the front bead on the target without paying any attention to the ring and hit your mark. You may enjoy this website: www.aosights.com

Aron, this is only opinion, but one that has come about over a lot of years of hunting with all types of rifles.

I think the so-called "PEEP", and a ghost ring are the same thing. The only difference is, most people see the ghost ring to have a larger opening. Most PEEPs have a removable aperture, so the actual opening can be changed for one of a different size, or completely removed to give you the large opening of a so-called ghost ring.

If properly mounted, and mated to a good front bead, I believe they are superior to the "one standing, and flip ups for close in work, but are inferieror to the express for general hunting, where many different ranges are to be taken. So I guess what I'm saying is, the Ghost ring/peep are better on a purely stopping rifle to be used only for that purpose, but not as good for general hunting!

I have seen one Hollis double rifle that is equipted with both! It belongs to Rusty, and has a standing wide V, and I think ONE FLIP UP, but in front of this it has a flip up sight with a slideing ladder type long range sight for long range! This is the best of both worlds, and the only thing lacking is a QD claw mount and low powered scope with a heavy reticle for shooting in the darkness of evening/morning!

i have a asheley peep on my .458 ZKK 602 and like it very much for a dangerous game rifle. My .470 double has the traditional express sights. I have shot lots of game with the BRNO and peep and I like it very much. Just practise with it.

As Mac said the "Ghost Ring" is merely a peep (slang for Receiver Sight) with the disc taken out of it to give it a .125 or larger hole to look through. at that point it becomes the "Ghost Ring"....An adopted wording from the fact that the sides of the hole fade away and the post or front bead and the target is all the eye focuses on...

This set up is argueably the fastest of the sights and the best set up on a DGR to be had and I agree with that summation. Others will opt for the scope of course.

AO Sight Systems offer .191" and .230" Ghost Rings for fastest aquisition. They are not peep sights with the main tube removed. The reason I think they are best for close in work on dangerous game is that they effectively create a single point of reference, while offering a line of sight closer to the actual boreline than the even the lowest mounted scopes.

I think that I have thumped this tub very often in the past, but I can not find a single GOOD reason for using a scope in dangerous game. For those whose eyes are still flexible enough to focus the express sights, they are excellent. However, those of us in clerical professions who have had to submit to trifocals, there is nothing like the peep sight. I even believe that for general hunting, especially in Africa where the ranges tend to be shorter than in the American West, they work beautifully. In either '03 or '04 we will return to Africa for buff and hippo and then continue on to RSA for plains game. I intend to carry two rifles, a .318 WR and a .404 Jeffery. Both will carry nothin but peep sights. That is my position!

And, we will be happy to view the pictures when you get back! There is absolutely nothing wrong with that position, IMO!
