Why are you posting that on the African Big Game Forum you say. Fair enough. O.K....you're around the nightly fire having a sundowner and your PH says: "It's bloody cold tonight...must be 10*. You, a very astute American, lean over to your hunting pardner and say "that's 50* F." Your buddy, astonished that you could convert it so quickly says: "How'd you know that?"

Well you could memorize the conversion chart, or simply learn a little formula that comes in handy. I use it in my line of work constantly and here's how to do it:

1.) Double the *C.
2.) Subtract 10% if that.
3.) Add 32.

It's that simple!

Eg. 10*C
1.) 10x2+20
2.) 10% of that is 2, so 20-2=18.
3.) 18+32=50* F.

Eg. 20*C
1.) 20X2=40.
2.) 10% of that is 4, so 40-4=36.
3.) 36+32=70* F.

Eg. 32*C
1.) 32X2=64.
2.) 10% of that is about 6, so 64-6=58.
3.) 58+32=90* F.

I know, I know...I need to get out a little more often!

Why bother? Just double the degrees C and add it to 32 and it gets you close enough for campfire drinking events, in case you can't do the math in your head!

F=(9/5)C+32

Theres even an easier way that I learnt from the Africans I met;

50 F / 10 C - Bloody cold - won't leave the heated car, can only be cured with a double brandy

70 F / 20 C - Damned cold - underpants still on, can only be cured with a double brandy

90 F / 30 C - Quite ok - Time to take the sweater off and relax with a double brandy

110 F / 40 C - To Hot - can only be cured with a double brandy

It's simple, just remember 10C=50F and add 18F for every 10C (or 9F for every 5C).

Terry

I created a conversion chart in Microsoft Excel in 5 degree (Celsius) increments. I printed it out and carried it in my wallet as a little reference card.

I'm going to make sure that part of my 50lb limit when I go to Africa consists of a calculator, reference chart, conversion tables and a thermometer. rotflmo

Remind me when I go. This stuff seems more important than the correct ammo. Wink

Mink and Wall Tents don't go together. Especially when you are sleeping in the Wall Tent.

My travel clock has a built in digital thermometer. I can push a button on the back of it and it will convert temp readings to C or F.

I bought it from LL Bean.

Lets see: -40 C, double that is -80 (-40+ -40 will be negative) and adding 32 makes it -112F!

That can´t be right Eeker

Cewe, negative signs get lots of folks everytime.

2 x -40 = -80

-80 x .1 = -8

-80-(-8) is actually -80 + 8 = -72

-72 + 32 = -40 Wink

Just so everyone doesn't wonder about me I married a Math teacher. rotflmo

Ah! But I was using the shortcut! Double (-40 + -40) the F and add 32 to get the C and adding a minus to a minus will give you a negative Big Grin

Now multiplying is a different story.

So what's the use in knowing the temperature in a place you're already at ? It's not like knowing exactly what it is will change it.

Why are there 20 replies to a question that has only one answer? Big Grin

oC= 5/9 x (oF-32)

0 oC = 32 oF
100 oC = 212 0F

This is so "simple" that I have stuck a conversion table to my office wall, and I have several colleagues who refuse to talk to me unless I use Fahrenheit... of course they are all engineers!
