After a long wait we can offer some truly excellent dangerous game safaris in the Caprivi. If you still are looking for a DG safari for this year this is a great opportunity with some excellent prices considering the trophy quality. Allan Cilliers has acquired Kwando Game Reserve and is working exclusively with us. The area is very remote providing not only great hunting but a very wild experience. All hunts will be conducted on foot by tracking with Allan's Bushman. We are expecting some very exciting lion hunts as well as elephant and all the rest. Expectations on elephant should be 55-70 pounds with larger definitely possible. Lion historically have carried great manes with Allan taking the #1 Namibian lion just to the east of Kwando. Leopards, buffalo, kudu and big sable are also available as well as the more common species. We are booking right now for safaris starting 1 August and running through November. If this looks like it could work for you please contact me anytime. It's about time! I thought they would never get around to giving out the concessions. Any word on the other areas? Are they open now too? I have heard (from very reliable sources within the industry) that Cilliers is a top notch ph.

I heard that Allan was going to hunt DG in Caprivi and that his son, Wayne, was going to run his bow hunting at Ha Nore. Glad to hear this has come to pass. Based upon my limited experience, Allan is top notch. I hunted with him at Ha Nore in 2004. Very knowledgeable (and willing to share it). An excellent tracker in his own right, although the Bushmen he hunts with are incomparable. I'll be back at Ha Nore next year, the Selous in '08. Maybe Caprivi in '09? Mark, how far in advance are you booking?

Mark, Just a couple quick questions. On the elephant trophy fee. It jumps $10,000 for an extra pound. That is an awful steep pound, isn't it? Also, the $2,500 transfer is it via air or ground? Looks like an excellent opportunity for a realatively 'fresh' area! Thanks, Graybird "Make no mistake, it's not revenge he's after ... it's the reckoning."

It jumps 10K for anything ove 70 lbs.

Right, however at 70 lbs it is $8,000 and at 71 lbs it is $18,000. Like I said, 1 lb = $10,000 jump. Graybird "Make no mistake, it's not revenge he's after ... it's the reckoning."

graybird, You read everything right. If the ivory goes over 70 pounds it jumps $10,000 on the trophy fee. The $2500 is a round trip charter from Windhoek to Kwando. Research a well known Bots operator and see what it might cost in total if you took a 70-80-90 pounder. I think you'll find it scary. Those are the only safaris that are fair to compare this to. Thanks Mark. I know those prices over in Bots can get higher then a kite in a hurry. Fair enough. I'd hope for a 70 lber so I could take two and still save money versus a 70+ lber. I'm sure there will be some excellent bulls pulled out of the area. Good luck to you and your clients!! Thanks, Graybird "Make no mistake, it's not revenge he's after ... it's the reckoning."

Is this a communal Concervancy or a Government concession? On the map it shows it as Kwando Communal Conservancy. It makes no difference, I just wanted to know if it was a gov concession, which would indicate that all gov concessions were assigned.

Wendell, You probably understand the verbage better than I do but Allan stated yesterday that Kwando was a Game Reserve. It actually falls in the Bwabwata National Park. M MARK H. Thanks, just trying to get a read on the situation with the Caprivi government areas. Either I haven't been paying attention, or they granted the concessions faster than I anticipated. We will see!

Wendell, Kwando and Buffalo were the only areas allocated. They are adjacent and compromised the whole Caprivi from the Okavango to Kwando rivers. Allan was awarded both areas but chose to only keep Kwando as he wants to offer a personalized experience and trying to hunt both areas would have been more than he could handle by himself. I see, sounds like this is a communal conservancy. If it were government, all would (should) have been granted. So, we wait ... yet again for the other areas. Thanks Mark.

lavaca, This whole thing with Kwando is moving ahead at WARP speed. At this time we are only booking '06 and we just sold a 21 day elephant/lion. Allan says as of this morning we will be able to take advanced bookings in August. Allan will be in our booth at Reno if anyone is interested in visiting with him about Kwando or his bow hunting operation. Mark Mark MARK H. Mark Wasn't Kwando the area that Mark Karyocou had for probably 20 years? Wonder why he gave it up? CFA *If you are not hunting in Africa you are planning to hunt in Africa*

I was in Namibia beginning of May and had the fortune to meet some of the major players in the industry and one of the "hot" topics at that time was the soon to be allocation of these communal conservancies around the Caprivi, etc. My understanding from those conversations was that lion WOULD NOT be offered to tourist hunting and that this was definetely a priority policy for Nature Conservation. The conservancies, Kwando included, would offer primarily elephant and buffalo (I think a minimum of 8 and 4 respectively would have to be taken in '06)and some limited plains game. Perhaps this has changed now and if so would be a dramatic about turn in policy It is also my understanding from PH's that hunted Kwando in the mid to late 90's that the average ele tusk expected is closer to 35 - 38 lbs and that during the years they hunted the area, taking between 8 - 12 elephants a year, they "struggled" to average close to 40 lbs. Has Alan hunted this area in the past and does he have records of elephants tusk weights taken from the area to substantiate his claim that elephants are expected to average 55 -70lbs? Bwanamich, Sorry but it would seem you have been misinformed. Allan Cilliers does have 2 lions on quota in Kwando for '06. As for the size of ivory I think someone has been fibbing to you. I'll make sure I post the results at season's end. Regards, Mark MARK H. Bwanamitch- I have seen photos at Allan's camp that were taken in Kwando in the 90's. It is a most impressive collection of photos and there were some large eles represented in those albums. The lion trophies were also stunning. The buff as I remember were not huge in width but had big bosses. From the photos it looks like a wonderful area to hunt.

Mark, Do you anticipate price increases with advance bookings after August or are figures listed above are because of the short lead times?
|

PWS, I do anticipate an increase but not a significant one. I'll post the new figures as soon as I have them. We are looking at this as being one of our very best offerings for elephant, lion, leopard and sable. In '07 we may be able to offer some additional species. Mark MARK H. Just to be clear, is that based on total weight, or per tusk?
|
one of us |
500grain, It's like the Botswana system were the heaviest tusk determines the trophy fee. Therefore a guy has to decide if it is worth it to shoot an elephant that obviously has 70 plus on one side but is broken off on the other just to get that one big tusk. Maybe he'd opt to pass and be satisfied with a smaller more closely matched set. I like the oddball stuff so I'd probably shoot the big unmatched set an figure out how to pay for it later. Mark, Symmetry or sheer weight, that is the question . . . Whether 'tis nobler (or preferable, in one's humble opinion, of course) to shoot the 100 pound one tusker or the 50 pounds per side two tusker. Now you have opened a real debate!
