Crocodile kills boy, eats remains Chronicle Reporter May 6, 2010 A 12-year-old-boy from Fort Rixon in Insiza District was killed by a crocodile while swimming in Ngezi Dam, police confirmed yesterday. The incident occurred on 16 April although it was reported to the police late, possibly because of the distance between the area and Fort Rixon Police Station, which polices the area. Ngezi Dam is near Zvishavane. Matabeleland South police spokesman Inspector Tafanana Dzirutwe said Tineyi Bhebhe went to the dam with two other juveniles with the intention of swimming. “Tineyi was the first one to get into the water but he was caught by a crocodile while he was swimming. “This happened in full view of others,” said Insp Dzirutwe. “The crocodile dragged him under the water and the other juveniles ran and told his father what had happened. “He alerted other villagers and they went to the dam but they did not see anything. They were also afraid of going into the water because of the crocodile. “They went back the next day and discovered his head, leg and some ribs. The rest of the body parts were not found.” Insp Dzirutwe said the remains were buried on 19 April. The relatives of the deceased later made a report at Fort Rixon Police Station. Insp Dzirutwe said no foul play was suspected. He urged members of the public to avoid crocodile-infested water bodies as there was a risk that they could be attacked. The police spokesperson also appealed to adults to monitor children as there were high chances that they may drown while swimming. I never saw anything about this in US media - so,therefore it never happened, right? (BTW, Kathi, maybe I'm ahead of you here about crocs but my local NY TV station had a news trailer this very morning that a NJ woman from Morristown was being buried after she had been killed by a croc in India while "snorkeling". (Yeah, apart from being surprised that enough of her had been recovered to have a funersl, I wondered about the idiocy of "snorkeling" in croc waters but that's all the info I saw. Of course, she was from Morristown,NJ, a definitely upscale neighborhood whose inhabitants are very definitely "environmentalists". Maybe she just ran into a croc who had not read the book) | |||
