DuckearIs there a 'traditional' short action African cartridge?
Thinking of a SA rifle for little stuff to match my 7mm Mauser, 300H&H, etc
Ideas? Thoughts?

jvw375Not sure about your definition of "small stuff" but the .425 Westley Richards happens to be the original Short Magnum cartridge of them all...

500 Jeffery doesn't require a magnum action.

DuckearI was thinking of getting the Ruger African in .223, but most of my rifles are Model 70s and I have an action sitting idle and pondering something along those lines in a more 'African' caliber than .223

GeorgeSHow about the 1915-vintage .250-3000 Savage (2.515" COAL)?
If you have to have an English cartridge, the.244 H&H (3.58" COAL)?

tendramsGive me a pair of 6.5x54s with a pair of 9,3x62s and a pair of 12,7x70mm Schulers....then I'll hunt the world for life. I will probably also need 2000 rounds of ammo per gun.

umzingeleHah what a question! .22 LR in a Mauser. Wonder how many small antelope, and of course guinea fowl and francolin have been taken with this rifle/calibre combination. Every young boy's dream! Yes a short action, and cartridge length does not get much shorter

GrenadierI don't know about traditional but I think the most useful caliber for "little stuff" to augment your "7mm Mauser, 300H&H, etc" would be the .22LR rimfire.

Sean RussellIt is obviously the most used cartridge in Africa, and is a short action--

Have used bullets from 200gr up to 500gr and taken game from Duiker to Eland to Buffalo.
What more could you ask for in one rifle?
And its shorter than the 375
