Anyone know any with good quality and less price than lewis and drake ?

Just got a quote today on an Admiral Baker gun rack from J and R Guram Co. Company is out of India. Not sure about them, as I haven't done any research yet. Their price is quite a bit below others, and about half the price of African Sporting Creations. Any references would be appreciated.

Do you have a web site for J & R Durham Co?
I tried to google them but didn't find them.

Have a look at www.melvillandmoon.com , its a South African Company that manufactures great canvas and leather bags as well as a small amount of campaign furniture.

I own a few Melvill and Moon pieces and it is the best money can buy.

The Lewis and drake stuff is made in India too. I looked at the suppliers trade list last year, but can't remember the names just now.

IIRC they also make some stuff for Purdey.

I will see if I can dig up the name.

This make me feel very nostalgic! I remember from around 1960 going with my dad to various Forest bungalows and rest houses where various colonial style furniture were around all the time. Most were made of teak and some were rosewood. Plenty of woven cane in the seats.

By the 1980s the good old stuff started to disappear and were replaced by steel & Formica!

J and R Durham Co. Company is the manufacturer / wholesaler / importer that Drake and other companies (Kevins) buy from and resell.

I got a price list in 12, contemplating a larger order for a friend's shop and a few pieces for myself. Wholesale prices are about 50-70% what you see them for sale in the US catalogs.

I have also had trouble finding companies that offer campaign furniture. I have had better luck searching online for something specific, like "Campaign desk" or "Roorkhee chair".
There are instances where companies have only one product that fits into the campaign furniture category so searching for "campaign furniture" will not produce those results.

I put a bunch in my favorites some time ago but unfortunately that was one or two computers ago as well.

Oh, I thought of one thing. Next time you're in Stockholm you might see what George Hensher has. They just might have something like that. They are on the corner of Storgatan and Skeppargatan.

Lewis and Drake wanted 1850 US for this chair, Guram wants 940 for the exact same chair.

I have not had any difficulty contacting Guram Co. via email. Raj Guram has been very prompt in responding to my inquiries. The cost of shipping is quite high,however. I think I might need to order several items to take advantage of the discount prices.

If anyone in the US is thinking of putting together an order so maybe we can import a crate to help share costs let me know. I have bought some stuff from Lewis Drake and it has held up well. They will dicker quite a bit on price at the shows if you have cash and buying multiple pieces. I want two of the same chairs that Dahlgren has posted above for my new bar I'm building.

Mac i found him on indimart, he have sent me some photos of other things and it looks good. Waiting for some more in the same style like the chair above.

Why buy out of India instead of Africa? Cheaper?

This is Jim from African Sporting Creations and we import the fine line of Melvill and Moon campaign furniture into the USA. Folks call them first, get excited about the deal they are going to get and then get a shipping quote but forget about packaging it up, fumigation fees, duties, customs and clearance and wind up paying about the same amount we charge and spend many hours for the priveledge. In terms of local service we carry all the spare parts in case you lose a piece which happens more often than you think.


The price you get for a small overseas shipment needs to be more than doubled to get to your landed cost and there is no guarantee it will work out even then. Damage in transit is your problem and not the shippers. Very similar to the recourse I have when I used to ship to apartments with Fed-Ex, UPS, Visa or Amex-just about none. Buy insurance-good luck getting a claim paid by a South African or Indian company.

Or you carry it back and find out US Customs wants a lacey act form at point of entry and if you cannot produce one it stays with them. Price is always different than cost and have heard all the different versions of this sad story.

When I used to cut trees for a living I always knew when there would not be any haggling over a fair estimate. When the wife came to the door and showed us what she wanted done and the ladder was on top of a freshly cut branch. Husband was inside with a broken leg or stiches. The easiest job anyone has is the one they are not doing!

Go into this one with your eyes open. I know the folks at Lewis and Drake and they are good folks and offer service after the sale which are the type of people we like to compete against as it is a fair comparison.

Gulam called us when they fist came to the USA and wanted us to buy from them. Prices were pretty similar to what we were getting from Melvill and Moon so the Devil we knew was better than the devil we didn't. They shipped over a container and when the sales did not flood in they started liquidating some items and started offerring some deals. My conversations with them were very professional and the products looked very nicely done.

I think it's probably a matter of volume. If a guy is wanting one chair, ordering direct from the manufacturer probably doesn't make any sense. If someone is planning on spending $4000 on furniture, failing to go with the manufacturer is probably idiotic.

Also (IMO) far more authentic.

Ordered one of these chairs last week. 30 day backlog. I've also been in contact with those that post on Indiamart. Fine folks, but Raj at J&R has been the most responsive and has quoted product all inclusive to me in CA USA. Quite transparent and I believe his quality is top notch.

Just received my Roorkhee chair from Tyler Patching at www.expeditionfurniture.com in Utah. Pulled it directly up to my firepit in the backyard. Pure USA work of art and extremely comfortable. For those that are looking for a Roorkhee chair, please consider Tyler's company. Lead time was 30 days and that was accurate. $350 + $40 shipping in US.

I have one which used to belong to my late f-i-l. He was a Methodist Minister in SWA / Namibia in the twenties, and he used to travel around by goods train, unpack his chair for the trip in the guard's van. I wish that I had written down some or all of his stories. I have one that I must recount some time. But I digress.
The old chair needs new canvas and leather, Melville and Moon only make them and do not repair them.
