Just for the heck of it. Let's say you can't have or don't want the tuffpak (I know many of you will still try and say tuffpak), what case, between the starlight and the pelican, would you choose? What are the pros and cons to each and why did you pick the one you did?

As with anything, there is a trade-off here. The Starlights are not nearly as weighty as the Pelicans. However, I (or rather some idiot baggage handler) managed to crack the starlight. I have yet to break the body of a Pelican but somehow the baggage handlers did manage to break off one of the four sets of lock flanges that are std. on the Pelican double rifle case. Not enough to be able to break into the case, but one step in that direction. Final decision, stick with the Pelican . . . you carry it for a much smaller amount of time than you actually need the protection it provides.

Hope this helps,

Some would say a Starlight is just a Pelican with metal bails (handles) and here is my experience with both.
Starlight:I got one and the lid was somehow off center..you had to hold it over in a certain position while you tried to close it. Would have been better if I had three hands.
Never took it on a trip as I did not like the problem so I sold it off.
Pelican:I took the two gun version to TZ in 1992 with a double 470 NE and a 416 Win Mod. 70.
It is heavy and the baggage apes managed to break off one of the corner bumper protecion pads. There was no damage to
the firearms inside. It had no wheels and would not stands up of course.
I still think I would choose the Pelican case of the two.
I just happen to sell Pelican these days so may I be of service to you?

I'm not "for" or "against" any gun case. I keep seeing that the Tuff Pak is lighter than the Pelican. What does the Tuff Pak weight?

TJ,

I'm pretty sure I have seen folks quoting 17lb for the Tuffpack while the Starlite is just under 15lb according to their website. The Pelican 1750 is quoted as being just over 25.5 lb including the foam inserts while SKB produces a plastic double rifle case which is I think is under 20lb but I can't find the exact figure right now.

Regards,

Pete

I have a Starlight that I bought as a 2nd for $90. My hunting companion has a Tuffpak. On the last trip to Africa the baggage handlers managed to break the end of the Tuffpak-I say break-it was crumpled as plastic will do but not broken. It was hit so hard that the front sight was knocked off a Ruger 77 inside a soft case. I don't know any case that is built for that. My Starlight is still OK. It is bulky and don't get one without wheels.
They have specials all the time so check their website.

Check out the Storm case # IM3300 and I think you will like it as well if not better than Pelican #1750. I am a dealer for both brands and happy to serve you.
I just received a super photo from Jim Wooten showing his Tuffpak in use on a train in Africa. What a great photo.
If you have photos of you and your Tuffpak don't forget to send them to Tuffpak. We want to use them in a new ad campaign.
According to a pvt. E mail from Dr. Duc the Tuffpak that was damanged is still in use. It must have taken some fierce blow.

The storm case sounds to be of good quality. Can anyone attest to it's durability?
