I am going to Mozambique next month for a buffalo hunt. I wonder if any of you have a recommendation on a good boots for the swamps. Thanks a lot.

I would use your favorite waterproof boots topped with
KUIU Yukon gaiters.

BTW, in my case they run true to size.

I used British Altberg Jungle boots on my Mozambique trip last year and can't even imagine something working better. In and out of the Zambezi river, through swamps, and back to dry ground. I've worn then more or less continually ever since for daily wear, and am taking them to Australia today to wear in everything from desert to swamp. They've already done that one too.


The only thing you have to decide is whether you want the ground grips or the Pananama soles and whether you want the super lightweight ones or the normal light ones. Remember that the British sizing system is different than the American. My size 11 (US and Canadian)feet need British sixe 10.The difference is that the British system starts at zero instead of 1.

Waterproof boots hold water in. What you need is to get the water out and deal with being wet.

I've used Palladium pampas (canvas) boots on all my rainforests hunts and in Mozambique.
I would look for boots that dry quick. Your feet get wet every day and it's important to get the boots dry asap.

I to wondered what to wear in the Marromeu in Oct, 2012. The attached picture shows an old,comfortable pair of low top Danners, water proof. My second pair were low top, cross/trainer/walking boots that drained well. I can't say I experienced any significant difference in comfort with either. Neither was damaged or moldy, remember everything is washed daily, and the Danners will be used on Sat for the deer season opener.

When I hunted in the Okavango delta, Bangweulu swamp and on the actual Zambezi flood plain in Mozambique a pair of canvas sneakers worked perfect where we were actually going to be walking in water. Take some light weight hunting boots also if you end up hunting the drier the edge habitat. Depending on the weather you might even find the delta mostly dry in Sept as we did.

IMO if your are going hunting in a month,now is not a good time to be experimenting with boots.It is best to, above all, wear boots or shoes that fit you well and that are broken in.With the right socks also.

I have used the "flats" type fishing boots used to wade out into the water in the Florida Keys. I was very happy with how they performed in Mozambique and they would have done well for me in the Bangweulu swamps as well.

A second option is a pair of canvas Converse Chuck Taylor All-Stars basketball shoes. The only problem with these is that the sole does not provide a lot of protection for the bottom of your foot. I was not as satisfied with these as I was with the flats boots.

There really is no break-in period with these canvas type boots, unlike what the Montreal Menace suggests.

I've hunted buffalo in the flood plains of Moz and recommend that you take two pairs of something cheap, lightweight and disposable... you'll never get that stagnant water smell out of them.

Mark Haldane suggested the Converse high-tops aka "Chuck Taylors" (if you're over 60... )

They worked great for their intended purpose, and they are still there!

IMO, you'll ruin a pair of good boots in those swamps.

These worked out great for the swamps when I hunted buff there. Just converse high tops!!!!

Converse hi tops or better yet, a cheap clone. they will stink so bad that most likely you will leave them. another alternative is tight fitting open sandals, to let the mud and water OUT. any good leather boot will be trashed. in June i wore open sandals in the Zambezi swampland of the Caprivi. when the mud got deep enough to pull them off, i went barefoot. worked fine and i gave the sandals to the tracker. i carry leather boot in the truck for use in dry areas, but wear the sandals otherwise.

I hunted Coutada 10 in Mozambique in 2009, we spent quite a bit of

time in the swamps, both in & out of the Argo. The canvas Palladium boots

were invaluable, easy to dry & comfortable. I usually wear the Courtney

boots, but these aren't as forgiving in wet environments! You can

buy the Palladium boots through Orvis. Have a great hunt!
