Researcher Carl Huchzermeyer who resides in the Bangweulu swamps sent me this picture of a young bull with exceptional horns. AR's Faisal and I convinced Carl to remove buffalo from quota for a couple of years to allow such Buffalo to breed and mature. Faisal took a very nice bull in 2015 but they were few and far between.

JefffiveAndrew,
In a herd like that what is the "usual" breakdown of breeding-age bulls to cows, and how many of those bulls actively breed?

bwanamrmVery nice young bull, indeed. 42"?

By all accounts in this herd there are about 6 bulls that are actively breeding but typically the females want the more dominant and bigger bulls.

Safari2It sounds like this herd needs to grow exponentially before it really becomes a viable hunting area for buffalo.
I have read however that the black lechwe population has really bounced back?
