We are about ready to have our trophys shipped from RSA to USA. The taxidermist is asking about cites permits for the zebra we took in Namibia. I was under the impression that no cites certificate was necessary for them. Is that the case? Danke Although cartridge selection is important there is nothing that will substitute for proper first shot placement. Good hunting, "D"

You'll need a CITES II Export Permit from the Namibian Authorities. Your outfitter/PH/Shipper.....somebody over there should be able to take care of it. Rich Elliott Rich Elliott Ethiopian Rift Valley Safaris

DHunter: No CITIES is needed from Namibia for Namibia harvested Hartman's. Though if you did indeed kill one in RSA you will need one to bring it into the USA. like Rich Elliot stated IF it was killed and being exported from Namibia your safari company should've taken care of that already or it is a simple matter for them to clear up.

Of course you need a CITES, Hartmanns are still on Appendix 2 of CITES. Your outfitter/ taxidermy/ shipper will arrange everything, so don't worry when hunting Hartman Zebra in Namibia Karl Stumpfe Ndumo Hunting Safaris www.huntingsafaris.net karl@huntingsafaris.net P.O. The problem is that the taxidermist is asking us to see that it gets done and have us apply to US FW for the permits. Although cartridge selection is important there is nothing that will substitute for proper first shot placement. Good hunting, "D"

Karl you were quick to jump on that, it may serve you well to read the entire post next time. I cannot think of any company hunting Namibia and not explained to the client about the paperwork for a Hartman's.

Chugach, not meant as critisizim, or in any way negative. I should have explained the whole procedure for CITES 1 & 11, but was in a hurry. (No excuse). Here goes (very generally)- for CITES 1 animals, you need a import CITES to land of destination first, for CITES 11, the country of origin issues a CITES permit first, then the accepting country issues a import permit. What I meant was, if you use a good outfitter and agent/ taxidermist for the dip and ship, you should not sweat it with CITES 11 animals, they will do all the neccicary paper work for you. YOU WILL NEED A CITIES PERMIT. IF IT DOES NOT ACCOMPANY THE CAPE IN THE SHIPMENT. US F&W WILL SIEZE IT AND YOU WILL RECIEVE A NOT SO NICE LETTER FORM THERE ATTORNEY THAT HAS BEEN ASSIGNED TO IT.IT DOES NOT MATTER WHAT YOU OUTFITTER/TAXIDERMISTS OR ANYONE HAS DONE. IT IS YOUR SHIPMET AND YOUR RESPONSABILITY TO MAKE SURE IT IS DONE! THE FINE CAN BE AROUND $5000.00 US IF IT DOES NOT HAVE A CITIES. HOPE THIS HELPS! THE FOLLOWING IS FROM THE US FISH AND WILDLIFE WEB PAGE: http://www.fws.gov/permits/faqs/FaqTUVWXYZ.shtml Zebra, Hartmann’s Mountain Do I need a permit to import my personal sport-hunted trophy? The Hartmann’s mountain zebra is listed in CITES Appendix II and threatened under the ESA. In general, a permit is required to import threatened species. The Hartmann’s mountain zebra, however, may be imported into the United States for personal non-commercial purposes, such as a personally taken sport-hunted trophy, without a threatened species permit, as long as the item was not part of a commercial activity. It must be accompanied by a foreign CITES permit which indicates that the item is for non-commercial purposes (Purpose Code “Hâ€) on the face of the document. Contact the foreign country to meet its requirements. The import of a zebra, its skin or other products purchased by tourists requires the prior issuance of a threatened species permit (click here for an application form), as well as a CITES permit from the foreign country. You must import your zebra item through a designated port unless you have received a port exception permit. If you are importing a trophy and it is perishable, you must notify the FWS wildlife inspection office at the port of entry or exit at least 48 hours in advance. You must present our declaration form to the wildlife inspectors, and receive clearance from us at the time of import. Check with the State to meet its requirements. ______________________
