For my past two safaris I took malerone, and used deep woods off liquid as a repellant...
For the second safari I use malerone, ultrathon by 3M a cream as a repellant..But I also sprayed my clothes, pants, shirts, hat, sox, and jacket to make sure as much as I could..with a permethrin bug killing spray...last for multiple washings..I even sprayed tent and flaps and mosquito netting and inside of truck also..
Ph came down with malaria and needed his other Ph to finish hunt..But my wife, son, and I stayed malaria free.. thumb

Thanks for the advice and experience in light of Wendell's recent tragic episode and subsequent miracle.

Note: These mozzies are going to infect you mostly at night, get good netting for your bed and make sure it is mozzie free when you climb in to sleep.

Spray!

Spray!

Spray!

crane, I can't emphasize enough to be very, very careful when it comes to self treatment of malaria. First of all, an accurate diagnosis is critical. Then one needs to know what the heck they are doing when it comes to administering medication. The wrong diagnosis, coupled with the wrong, too much, or too little medication, will leave you as dead as if you didn't seek treatment.

Mike's right, at least as far as the common preventative meds for malaria go. Chloroquine in particular can be an overdose hazard. The principle is, if you've been taking prophylaxis, and contract malaria, the treatment medication must be a different type to the preventive one.

However, some of the treatment meds available outside the US [these you take only if you've got malaria] don't seem as great a hazard. Side effects, sure, but not likely to kill you.

Oil industry companies often operate in malarial areas, and as you'd expect, take it very seriously indeed. In fact, agreement to malaria prophylaxis is a condition of employment in those areas. There are some around the Pacific too, as well as India, for example. And some in South America.

Had a browse around the global intranet of an oil major, and they actually issue a 'Malaria Survival Kit' [called just that] to employees going to P. falciparum areas. It's a prescription item, and contains 3 blood test kits [specific for falciparum], and a course of Coartem/Riamet tablets that lasts 3 days. Plus self-medication and physician info sheets. This medication is in the artemisinin group, as was Wendell's [artemisinate].

Edit: Further info on these kits at http://www.smiequip.com
They supply at least ExxonMobil and Baker Hughes with these.

Cheers,
Doug

I used permethrin on my hunting pants and really gave my gaiters a good soaking before going to RSA last year. Between my PH, my Wife and I, I was the only one who did not get tick bite fever.
