Just to let you all know that I recently spoke with Dirk Rohrmann in Namibia, who many of us have hunted with. He and Rita (his wife) are very excited about their new concessions and are offering hunts for plains game and Leopard. They are going to be operating under the new name of Ongeyama Safaris. He does not plan to attend the SCI convention as he is busy setting up the new operation but can be reached via email info@namibianhunter.com.na I first heard about Dirk on this very forum and having hunted with them, I can personally vouch that you will have a great time hunting with him and Rita.

Do you know what happened to their previous farm/area, and the one they hunted before that? I think anybody considering a hunt with them would search the forums, so might as well proactively address it.

My wife and I hunted with Dirk & Rita in 2006 and had a great time. It was our forth trip to Africa and the best vacation we ever had. I have spoken on the telephone with several other people who post here and they all had a great time to. I would not hesitate to book with Dirk again. Some hunters go on a 7 day plains game ranch hunt expecting it to be a Peter Hathaway Capstick adventure in deepest darkest Africa. They are let down when they discover that’s not how it really is. Some hunters are not happy no matter what you do for them. I have shared camps with both types and I always got a good laugh out of listening to their complaints.

i read the whole hunt report in that link, and it sounded like a decent hunting trip! it's a shame the guys kid got sick on the return flight, but that has no bearing on the outfitter. Same deal with lost luggage. these things happen, and it's not the fault of the safari company. it also sounds like the client had opportunities on a wide variety of game, but didn't find the species he was looking for. i guess that high fence didn't help that much! with a little additional research, he would not have been surprised at the presence of a fence. all in all, i'd say the trip was a success! NRA Life Member Gun Control - A theory espoused by some monumentally stupid people; who claim to believe, against all logic and common sense, that a violent predator who ignores the laws prohibiting them from robbing, raping, kidnapping, torturing and killing their fellow human beings will obey a law telling them that they cannot own a gun.

I think some read all the success here and think it's shopping. No doubt, the best trophies I have are animals that I had no intention on taking, but acted on when available... If you confine yourself to a set list of must haves, you are doing yourself an injustice. The PH then comprimises so you don't go away discouraged... It's hunting! Not list filling...high fence or not.... I can't get a bushbuck if my life depended on it.....argggg....but my very first African animal was a 58" kudu..the way it goes.... Dan

And some people expect the outfitter to keep his word regarding having a private camp and which area you'll be hunting in. Dirk Rohrman and/or Rita did neither of the above with Wannabebwana and his family, nor with another poster on here who hunted with them, and probably others that we don't know about. If their word is no good, I wouldn't hunt with them if they were the only outfitters in Namibia. xxxxxxxxxx When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. If not, why support someone who doesn't support us? Consider spending your money elsewhere. NEVER, EVER book a hunt with BLAIR WORLDWIDE HUNTING or JEFF BLAIR. I have come to understand that in hunting, the goal is not the goal but the process.

I hunted with Dirk and had a great time and great trophies. The area wasn't fenced (high fence) just cattle fence as required by law. All the hunting we did was spot & stalk. I guess that's one of his new areas. He got a new website too: http://www.ongeyamasafaris.com

woodmanDan hit the nail on the head. As I explained to Steve (not Shakari)Robinson, my first wife had some expectations that didn't come to pass, too (she wanted me to give up MY 35+year career in engineering to sell real estate with her). Hunting is, by definition, an adventure and things happen on adventures - airline things, animal things, weather things. Maybe Texans have figured out how to control those, but the rest of the world hasn't. I read that recommended thread and I saw damn little that a PH could control and, by and large, it looked like an OK (not Oklahoma) hunt. Wannabebwana said up front he expected "the hunt of a lifetime". That's some mighty high expectations. How many of us have been on more than a few safaris, foreign or domestic, which have lived up to that billing. What I'm saying is we all need to read these threads with a grain of salt and not be so all fired sure that what we read is all we need to know. Now, in the interest of full disclosure, I'm going hunting with Dirk Rohrmann again this June because he has always met or exceeded my expectations. And he has always been a man of his word in our dealings. Gentlemen I just read the report posted by RR4Hunt. It does sound like he had a bum trip in so far as his travel went and loosing their luggage and so on. As anyone who has been to Africa will tell you shit happens. I have lost my bags twice going from NY to the SCI show in Reno, so that's part of travelling. I don't see how that the outfitter can be blamed for that! I have never been to the camp mentioned, but anyone who has been to Namibia knows that MOST hunts in Namibia are conducted on private ranches, farms. There are fences, however most of these will not keep the game in and are simply boundary marking fences. Many farms also have a fence enclosing the immediate property for security reasons. They have dogs and livestock and prowling leopards that need to be kept out. Seeing a fence does not make it a canned hunt. The fact that the gentlemen did not shoot his most desired species I guess proves that Dirk was not hunting in an enclosed area. If he was I dont see why he would not have taken the hunter directly to what he wanted to shoot. If that was his game it would have been that simple for him to do so. Also from what I understand and feel free to correct me, if there are non native species such as wildebeest the ranch has to be fenced, so that they cannot get out. Africa is a fluid place more than most places. Concessions and ownerships of hunting areas change all the time. If you have faith in your PH and he delivers what he promises that's more important. At the end of the day this is hunting, so be prepared to come home empty handed or go to a high fence operation. BillC, Dirk was managing the OKanduka farm where I hunted. From what I know they left the property as a lot of it was ravaged due to bush fires and the game was wiped out. Goes back to my comment about Africa being a less than stable place and as an experienced Africa hand that you are, you know what its like. When we hunted with Dirk at Okanduka we has a super time and in 14 days, my friend and I shot: 3 springbok - 2 were 17.5"! 4 kudu - largest was 50" 2 oryx - one 41.5" bull 1 eland - 35" 1 bait warthog 3 hartmann zebra 1 female leopard shot, 1 male missed in the day at about 150 yards, while it was on top of a rock 1 hartebeest 1 common impala We could have shot more game, but took a couple of days off and just enjoyed hanging around the camp. That's been my own personal experience hunting with Dirk! So make your own judgement.
