Question for members/outfitters:

In 2020 sometime, is it possible for myself and my wife (non-hunter) to go on safari for me to kill a Cape buffalo and really nice warthog for less than $8k, all in?

Thanks!

Just to clarify you mean “All in” for the basic hunt cost excluding airfare?
8k would be an outlier price... you will get many responses here but I would look for a management hunt or a cancellation deal to try and get near that number.
I personally would try and do a proper tracking hunt in a wild area (Zimbabwe most likely for your money) to get the best experience for your money. beware of cheap South African deals on high fence buffalo that come to the truck looking for food. I’ve taken some wonderful pictures like that lol but would never “hunt” one.

You may be able to get a management Bull behind the fence in RSA and a warthog, but probably not with your wife along and certainly not with airfare.

Sorry, guys, I guess I meant "on the ground" in RSA or another country in Africa, not including airfare, dip & pack, shipment back home, taxidermy, etc.

In other words, what most outfitters quote without the "excluded."

Also, if you can survive the heat, a late season hunt, October or November to buy an unsold quota.

I haven't heard of a Cape Buffalo hunt for 8k,all in, for years. Daily rates are close to, or are north of 1k daily, and the cheapest trophy fee that I have seen recently is $5500.00. Good luck for a miracle-who knows-maybe a cow buff.

You might want to call Mark Young. He represents an operator in Zimbabwe who has private land and the price may be close to what you’re seeking. It is fenced, but my understanding is the bush is thick and a proper hunt.

I think your going to struggle to find a Buffalo hunt for 8k with an observer going with you.

I can offer a 5 day Non-trophy Buffalo package below 34" and non exportable in Zimbabwe for $9,500 but this does not include an observer.

For an extra $1000 you can export the bull. Warthog would be $500.

You would target old bulls with broken horns or scrum cap bulls.

I saw that while in RSA on a plains game hunt. I was in a truck with the landowner who asked if it was OK with me if he took a few minutes to feed his buffalo before we started an afternoon hunt. No problem I said. As soon as we pulled into the field behind a fence the Buff started walking out of the bush towards the truck. To my surprise the farmer got out of the truck and walked among the Buffalo while putting out several bales of hay. That was enough to convince me never to hunt one in RSA or behind a fence.

For that money you are not going to have to make some major compromises, ie you may get to shoot a cow or a tame reject bull.

Buffalo hunting is overrated anyway. Kudu, bushbuck, nyala, even trophy impala are more fun to hunt. You can have a wonderful fair chase plains game hunt for that amount of money, taking some real trophies and creating some great memories, with wife in tow. There are any number of great destinations for same. Big ugly warthog will narrow down the list quite a bit. And since you are on a budget you should probably narrow your focus to RSA.

The last buffalo I sold for $8000 was in about 1982 I think..They sell for almost that at auction to the breeders in Africa or did last time I went to one..you might get lucky and get a broken horn or sub quality or even a cow, but I really doubt it..I suspect you could get one for perhaps $12,000 to $14,000 under some circumstances..The best way I know to help you is go through a booking agent and let him find one for you, he will have the contacts that you don't...

I know of a $7500 hunt for a lesser bull that includes a few days daily rate and the buffalo are born wild (sort of) on the property and the property is a decent size by RSA standards ... but they do feed them during the winter months esp in dry years .. and you can hunt them on foot (sort of), that is if you ignore them at the feed troughs on your way to and from camp ... but this is really for a person who is not physically up to the real deal and not a satisfactory substitute for hiking the hell all over Africa to find a bull, or not ...

I guess I need to explain a little more . . .

I went on two safaris some years ago. The first was to RSA with two of my sons, and we shot plains game: kudu, gemsbok, impala, common and black springbok, red hartebeest, black wildebeest, and zebra.

Then a few years later I took my youngest son to Zimbabwe as a college graduation present, where he shot a Cape buffalo and a nice sable. I took a blue wildebeest, Chobe bushbuck and a genet.

So, I've killed about all the plains game I care to, save a warthog. Always wanted one but never had the opportunity.

The budget didn't allow a second buffalo on the Zimbabwe safari, which is too bad, as at the time, the trophy fee was $2000.

I'm in my 70's, had quadruple bypass surgery a few years ago, and have maybe one long-haul hunt left in me, and if I go, I'd want my wife along.

So, all I'm looking for is a good warthog and any old buffalo, as long as it's not a pure put-and-take operation. Broke horn, sub-trophy type, anything that keeps the price down. I'd just have the skull and maybe the hide shipped home; would not do a wall or pedestal mount.

Quality of the hunt is much more important than quality of the animal.

I hope this makes things a little better defined. If what I'm looking for doesn't exist, so be it.

Thanks again for all the very valuable input!

I hunt buffalo cows as they cost a lot less than bulls. They are the same to hunt as bulls.

Some say cows are a bit harder to hunt in that they are often the first to bug out when you are stalking them. The bulls sometimes stay for one more look. Cows are tricky, fast and troublesome. Lots of fun to hunt!

My first two buffalos were bulls and they are now wall mounts. I don't get taxidermy work done any more. My son gets his animals mounted. Bullseye Taxidermy is highly recommended.

The LowVeld near Kruger park is good for affordable buffalo.

I recommend Pieter Kriel of Mkulu Hunting Safaris.
I think that you can do that kind of hunt for $8000 USD.

Good luck (and Gig 'em), Nitro. Never hurts to ask. I understand there are some pretty serious drought conditions in Namibia and parts of South Africa. A good booking agent might be able to find something that appeals to you.

You are quite correct! I'm getting a serious number of PMs and several very appealing offers.

Now I just have to figure out which outfit to choose Eeker!

Thanks, and Gig 'em back at you! tu2

Sir, I send you a PM with a suggestion. It is a REAL hunt.

I have personally hunted the fenced area in Zimbabwe that Mark Young represents and although I do not know the PH there, I can speak for the Buffalo hunt. It is a good deal an a fantastic setting. Do NOT go later than August though it might be too hot then. I would go in July to Zim for this.

Good luck and I hope you get it right!
