Harry Selby hunted with a Rigby 416 and a Winchester 458.

I heard that he liked the Winchester so much that he used it in preference to the Rigby.

I believe it was the ammo issue that got Selby interested in the 458.

I have handled the rifle Joe Coogan spoke of having Lon Paul build in the article and it is a very nice piece of functional art. Joe and I are about the same height so the rifle fit me very well also.

Pics of Selby's .416 Rigby:

These are some of the images from the article at

(Savage99's link) back when the NRA had the article online on their web site.

I thought I remembered reading that Selby went to the 458 when he noticed keyholing with the Rigby due to shooting the barrel completely out. Thought he switched while getting the Rigby rebarreled.

Harry Selby used the 458 Win. for a very short time between 416s and didn't much like it..He did however like the pre 64 M-70 rifles..Thats from the horses mouth...Harry was truly a 416 Rigby fan, and probably he is the person that made it popular, I suggest it would have died on the vine were it not for Selby and Ruarke...

Mark Selby, Harrys son and PH for TGT, uses a .416 Rigby sometimes but mostly a 450-400-3' given to him by Robert Ruarke, his Godfather. but of course these things change from day to day, so who knows.

I guess they are still building the 416 on '98's.

Lats time I spoked to Harry (about 2 months ago), he told me that he still uses his .318 Westley Richards.

Harry is now 80 years old!

Gail Selby Wentink (Harry's daughter) has a web site. Some good stories and photos. It's worth a visit.

This rifle was given to Mark Selby by Robert Ruark. It was once owned by WDM Bell.
Now there is another rifle with some history!!!
