I have a filmed interview with both Peter, and Gordon present and the first shot went through the back of the lion's head but missed the brain and spine and knocked out a canine tooth. The first shot put the lion down for a while, then the lion regained it's feet in a short time and came. As Peter was describing the situation, he stated that as he was firing on the advancing lion, he could hear a very unusual sound to his right that was described as "click, boom, click boom, click NOTHING, then another Click, boom"! That was three hang fires and one dud! The lion was hit ten times with three by the 500,and seven by the 375 Mauser. As Gordon said "every time the lion was hit it did all sorts of things like spinning and changing direction, giving them a little more time, but by the time he was down for the count it was getting serious"! This tells me that Capstick was working hell out of that Mauser. Capsticks Mauser held five down and one in the chamber, and Gordon got two hang-fires, reloaded, and got the dud, then then another hang-fire. This all happened at a time when most NE ammo one could get was old and prone to problems! I doubt that Gordon ever hand-loaded any ammo for his double. So what I'm saying here is, if this was a made up happening both Gordon and Peter were in on it, as both were there in the interview! .................................................................... ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

Sean Russell, you telling AR about yourself 'sweating real blood' while hunting was much more creative and imaginative that anything that chronic alcohlics like Craptick,Ruark,Hemingway and Osa Johnson ever wrote about on their hunting.
