It's still dark outside, but the sky is starting to break into light. Babblers and shrieks are waking up, their shrill cries passing as the flocks land and fly, land and fly, passing by the camp. Far far in the distance there is a hippo pod discussing the day. The camp sounds are foreign to natures, but announce that the day has started.
As the sun turns yellow in the sky, the doves start their continuous sounds.. the sound of the doves, the sound of the bush. Cuckoos, break into the monotony of the doves every so often. quacks from the ducks as they fly up the river. I kudu barks his warning, as the vervet monkeys announce your presence.
As the sun gets higher, an elephant screams as gives chase to your cruiser, telling you to get out of his yard. You can hear the grunt and rustle of bushes as mama warthog and her siblings flee. Still the doves are cooing.
2 pm the baboons are going to water, chattering all the way. angry crys as 3 of them vie for position. The bark of an impala that got to close to a sleeping croc before he noticed it. The gunts of the old bull hippo, leaving the water to lay in the sun.
Yet the day wears on and the heat of the sun dwindles. Dusk is on the way and the sounds of relief from the heat are crackling through the bushes and trees. A startled bushbuck leaps across the road, warning others of your presence. As the night approaches an old tom leopard coughs and saws, and the baboons scream at him. The pods of hippos are starting their nightly conversations.
The sounds of camp seem loud in the still of the evening. The mopane fire is crackling, the clink of the ice in your sundowner glass. Way in the distance you can hear the lion calling for others in his pride. oooowoop, oooowoop, hyenas has found a meal, the buzzing of the insect world is putting you to sleep.
Listen - can you hear mother africa calling to you

Not to hijack the thread, because I can still remember the sounds of my first of many mornings in Africa. I would love to find some recordings of these sounds to play in my trophy room. Anybody have advice?

The sounds are one of the advantages of video vs only still camera... I just love to hear those sounds.

Brice, if you have video, you could probably make a CD of the audio only.

Best regards, D. Nelson
