I was lucky enough to know George, and to have sat and talked to him at the last Dallas Safari Show he attended just four month before he finally succumbed to his illness. The little fat man has been sorely missed by all who knew him!

I was fortunate enough to have known.....and hunted with George. After all, he did live here in my home town of Farmington, New Mexico. When I was looking into taking my first safari to 'somewhere' in Africa? George gave me some good instruction and recommendations. I will always appreciate his friendship, trust and candor. He was one heck of a man, a good friend, and although I never got to hunt with him in Africa, apparently a fine PH. THANK YOU for reposting this thread.

I never hunted with George, but I got to know him by buying and editing his articles for Safari magazine. We also spent a few hours over breakfasts at SCI conventions. He was a fine fellow.

George is missed as a fallen hero.
I am a lower level member of several clubs where he shined like the sun and moon and stars:
Country Boy in Africa Club, Accurate Reloading One of Us Club, and more ...
Someday I hope to join him in the Happy Hunting Grounds Club.

Just stopped by the Ft. Worth Cabelas where they have the Davenport "last" 416 Hoffman. Along with his Tanzanian PH license, book #416 and a note explaining how the rifle got built and why.

Very nice deal all around!

I got to meet George a couple times at Dallas...one helluva nice guy!

There is also a 416 Hoffman by Frank Wells in the Cabelas in Lacey, Wa.

George is a man about whom I have never heard anything but kind words. I wish I had the luck to know him as some of you did.

Does anyone know if there are any copies of Georges book still out there for sale? I mean at normal pricing.

And don't forget his wonderful wife with whom I correspond frequently. Boy!, was George blessed with a kindred spirit for a lifelong companion... and who could hold her own with the best of them. God bless Mary Hoffman, too.

Very nice memorial.

We seldom get to choose
But I've seen them go both ways
And I would rather go out in a blaze of glory
Than to slowly rot away!
