Anyone know anything about the wildboar and rusa hunting in Mauritius? I sent an email to the company asking about it, when I find out I will post it here.

Mauritius is off the cost of Madagascar for those of you Geographically challenged.

It's been 17 years since I was on Mauritius, but one thing I remember as worth visiting is The Pamplemousses garden. A botanical garden with huge water lilies. Big enough for kids to sit on.

If you do go hunting there, use a day to visit this place.

The beaches were quite nice too back then, and I presume they still are. Although the island is probably much more developed (and touristified?) now.

Good luck.

Just have a try to enter Mauritius without any hotel reservation. This island will never let a backpacker enter.
Sure developpement is growing but life and environment qualities are the motto.
Not the luxuous standard of Seychelles Islands but just in the tow.
No trouble to rent a cotage 6000 $ per day.

JB,

I arrived there via sailboat from Australia back then, and remember that Port Louis (or at least the harbor area) was not very safe at the time. We even had a thief sneak onboard in broad daylight. He was quickly taken care of... After a few days to sort out paperwork etc, we continued north to Grand Baie(sp?) where there was a luxery hotel on the beach. We splurged for dinner there one night, although they hesitated letting us in with the other guests! Fortunalty for us, there was an extremly fat French woman at the next table, who was ridiculously wealthy. She was there with her Italian gigolo(!), and after a while we ended up sitting at their table talking the rest of the evening. She ended up buying us dinner, and sharing her box of Cuban cigars with us. It was the first Cuban cigar I'd had in my life. But I must admit that all the dinner and Cuban cigars in the world couldn't get me to trade places with her Italian "Toy Boy"! She was that big and ugly! But still a nice lady who had lots of good stories on hand, and a good sense of humor.

Mauritius was a nice enough country back then, but I can imagine that it has now maybe become a bit too much developed for my taste.

When I was at Humani, in Zim, in Oct this year, there was a group of five or six French Maritians. Very nice folks, all. They told me there wasn't much for hunting on Maritius.

Of course, compared to Humani, this would be true of nearly anywhere.

FWIW,

I went to Mauritius in 1993 with my family on a five day vacation; we were living in Madagascar at the time so it was a quick flight. We stayed a couple of days with friends and also two nights at a hotel. I went scuba diving, there is also good deep sea fishing for bill fish. I went up to the lodge that offers hunting but it was off season and no one around to talk to about hunts. The deer are not inidigenous and there are only a couple of tags per year. I was told it was expensive. Personally I would concentrate on scuba diving, golf, and deep sea fishing if you are planning a trip to Mauritius. There are much better places to hunt.
