I’m not sure this is the correct sub forum, but he mentions Africa and this is the most popular sub forum here. Gene Hill always had a way with the pen or typewriter. I remember him mostly for his tales about upland hunting and his four legged companions. He left us 21 years ago and this foreshadowing tale seems to have been published posthumously, but is scary and sad. http://sportingclassicsdaily.c...y-took-my-guns-away/ Should it belong elsewhere, please move. Wow. Loved Gene Hill and have a book of his. He wrote beautifully. I always remember the one about the fellow he talked with in a blind that didn’t have any close friends. This article struck a chord, so many of us in Aus lost Firearms in the government steal back after Port Arthur. It has been a battle ever since. DRSS

I saw this in the Sporting Classics e-mail. Great reminder of why we must continue to defend our gun and hunting rights. NRA benefactor life member SCI life member DSC life member

I'm almost as blue as if it had already happened. Sad to think that that day could actually happen during my lifetime. LORD, let my bullets go where my crosshairs show. Not all who wander are lost. NEVER TRUST A FART!!! Cecil Leonard

Knew Gene well. We both did our first safaris together to Zimbabwe in 1982.

This thread brings back some fond memories, as I had the pleasure of spending a week in 1985 stalking red stags in the Scottish highlands on a group hunt hosted by Gene and Marsha Hill. Gene had wonderful stories and it was a treat to get to know someone who's writing I've always admired and enjoyed. I'll never forget a conversation we had one evening, talking about bird shooting and shotguns. I assumed that he was an aficionado of 20 gauges and asked him which 20 gauge doubles he preferred. He simply said "Anything a 20 gauge can do, a 12 gauge will do better". I think I need to take one of his books along when I head across the pond for Zambia in a few months. It's been awhile since I've read his work.

Exactly why when a member of this forum who calls himself a hunter and a shooter said he supports David Hogg against the NRA...I lost it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ J. Have long admired Gene Hill's writings. Many fond memories of Maine winter nights spent reading him. I hope confiscation is never tried on a large scale. Or any scale for that matter. Lots of folks will lose their lives in the process.

Coincidence, I just read that last night too. More than enough to make a gun person concerned. I liked the part about: "some of my favorites are buried behind the barn were we used to shoot quail" George "Gun Control is NOT about Guns' "It's about Control!!" Join the NRA today!" Yes, it was. I was the 'youngster' in the group. I was only 26 years old at the time. That truly was a special trip, also for all the wives. Remember Eddie MacGregor playing the bagpipes during dinner on our last evening? Or the private tour of Blair Castle?

Good memory. Also beside Gene and Marsha, there was Ed Zern and Richard Wolters. Jim and Jan Rickoff, Lynn and Hamlin Betty, Paul McKean and wife, and my wife Anne and I ( Edwin Obrecht). Couple of others that I forget. A very fun adventure.

I brought along my cousin, John Caffaratti and his wife, along with my wife. While I don't recall the others that were there (33 years ago is a long time), I do remember how much some of the fellows disliked hunting on Pitmain Estate. I was assigned to hunt there on our last day and was dreading it. Once the gamekeeper realized that I could walk and keep up with him, he set out to make it a great day. I ended up shooting 2 stags that day, including a 12 pt. Stag that is hanging on the wall above me as I write this. Lots of great memories from that trip. I wish I would have gone on a few more of Jim Rickoff's trips.
