this site shows percentages of kills on shot placements.. http://www.alphatrilogy.com/06...to-shoot-a-bear.html. Lets forget that its on a bear for the moment. Do you belive they are generally correct, not exact of course, or are they totatally misconsieved.. I would like to take into account the heat of the moment, moveing target etc. It looks to me like the frontal and raking shots percentages are so low due to poor pennetration and low bullet mass? The area could be improved with more concentration to the shoulder and hips? Also why in the top 30 percent frontal shot couldnt you also shoot at the snout?.. thanks dave hunter, blackpowder shooter, photographer, gemology, trap shooter, duck hunter, elk, deer, etc..

I am afraid this is no different than any drawing showing what will and will not kill an animal. They talk in absolute terms, even with percentages shown. In my experience, the angle is really immaterial as long as one has the right rifle and caliber. I have shot buffalo from every conceivable angle, and had no problems killing them. I do use bullets that will penetrate a buffalo from one end to the other.

I agree 100%. As long as the bullet goes through a vital area, it does not matter from what "direction" it came from. I also believe that too, soft a bullet will cause you more problems in the long run, than a bullet that is too hard. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

It appears the diagram is calling out the percentage of the vital area that is exposed, rather than giving some estimate of the odds of killing the animal if shot at that angle. As it's been said many times, if you have the right rifle and bullet, shot placement is what counts. This chart is just showing you how careful you need to be when it comes to shot placement.

I am sure some of you might remember Hallamor's "payline" drawings. That was one of those really outlandish ideas, which defied any logical explanations to it.
