Every time I watch a new episode of Carter's W.A.R. I am more impressed. The show is educational, informative and entertaining while stressing how important conservation is to the African continent and our hunting heritage. Ivan, Branlin Shockey and Jim Shockey need to be recognized for the contribution they are making to our cause.

I only wish that it would be picked up by a major network or NatGeo so some of the ignorant antis could see what real conservation looks like.

I thought that Ivan's recent show on gorillas in the Congo was excellent.

The shows on gorillas and giraffes were both excellent and it is a show that I believe is ultimately destined for a larger cable outlet. They are well produced and narrated and the content is interesting. Hopefully a cable channel with a broader reach will ultimately pick up the show.

In the spirit of constructive criticism, I will say that I think the show could do a much better job of weaving in the role that hunting plays in conservation and that hunters play as conservationists (and yes I understand that omission may be intentional to create an appeal for the show with a broader cable outlet). Other than Ivan mentioning at the outset that he is a hunter and a conservationist, there is generally little to no discussion of hunting as a conservation tool in the shows. There are so many obvious ways this could be done since the shows talk about population growth and habitat loss . . . why not mention that in areas where photographic safaris are not feasible hunting dollars are ensuring that precious habitat is preserved. Or the distinction between carefully regulated hunting with established quotas and poaching. Or the dollars from hunting and the role they play in anti-poaching efforts. For example on the show with Mark Haldane and wounded elephant, I cannot recall any meaningful discussion or mention of the fact that Mark was safari operator, that the dollars from hunting enable him to operate his anti-poaching efforts, etc.

In an episode on the BVC, I think they highlighted hunting paid the bills.

The Ivan Carter Wildlife Conservation Alliance is doing a lot of good things. The ICWCA is supporting six projects currently, all very worthwhile. Results have been seen already. Hopefully, a lot more good things to come.

All valid points Mike.

As usual, very well said. We're deep into the second season and the role hunting plays in conservation remains largely silent. This needs to change, soon ....

Already I was beginning to fall into the African way of thinking: That if
you properly respect what you are after, and shoot it cleanly and on
the animal's terrain, if you imprison in your mind all the wonder of the
day from sky to smell to breeze to flowers—then you have not merely
killed an animal. You have lent immortality to a beast you have killed
because you loved him and wanted him forever so that you could always
recapture the day - Robert Ruark
