Kudu Rut
Heading to the Save this weekend for a hunt with the Duckworths.

One of our target animals is Kudu. I just found out that the Kudu are in full rut.

I have enjoyed many bull elk rut hunts, also moose, mule deer / whitetail, mountain caribou, and antelope in the rut.

Would love to hear from you experienced African hunters who have experience hunting Kudu while the rut is in full swing. What are some of your stories, observations , and strategies of hunting Kudu in full rut .

Not unlike an elk, a kudu bull will round up a harem of cows and guard them against other males while they come into estrus so he can mate with them. Probably the biggest difference in hunting during the rut versus a non-rut period is that where you find females you will also find a male. And like any male in rut, they move around more and tend to be more visible.

You mention elk and moose; in the rut, calling is deadly. Not so for kudu, so there is a big difference there. But as Stonecreek says, your odds of seeing them are higher.

Kudu are cool.

How many cows will a bull Kudu have in his harem in a prime area?

The 55" bull I shot had 12 cows with him. Luckily he left them temporarily and went to water, where we cut him off and killed him.

Seems like a toot or two on an elk call couldn't hurt...
