I know that this does not really belong on an African forum, but I figured some of my fellow African hunters might have some imput.
I am going to Texas in a couple of months for Blackbuck and possibly a Corsican sheep hunt.
I wanted to know about the quality of the meat of the blackbuck. The outfitter states it as being excellent, but I want to hear first hand tooth quality from other hunters.
Also, I wanted to know about the challenge of hunting Corsican sheep. I know that there are a lot of variables such as terrian, acreage and so on.

I've been hunting exotics since the '70s. Blackbuck (although I've yet to take one) is excellent eating. Corsican, as well as all wild Sheep, will have a milder "mutton" taste compared to lamb. Young lamb's or Sheep, have little to no mutton flavor. Old rams such as you may encounter on a well managed ranch, can be tougher and gamey. That's why someone came up with mint sauce
I've taken a number of Corsican varieties and Mouflon. My last was this past October with Wendell Reich.

sevenmagltd.Paul, the meat on blackbucks is good. About a 6 month old ram or doe is even better. I had a client from Arizona take a blackbuck and he claimed it was the best meat he ever ate. To be honest, you've got to be creative to make the sheep taste good.

DesertRamCan't say much for sheep, but I'll confirm that I found blackbuck quite tasty. I've never eaten a big male (are they rams, bucks, what?), but I've shot two older females that were both quite good. Axis is far better though, so if you get that opporunity don't pass it up.

Oday450I took a nice Corsican this winter. When I tried to butcher it the meat was so strong smelling (almost like urine) my wife would not let it in the house and my dogs would not touch the scraps. It's the only animal I've taken that I did not keep the meat.

I have had the pleasure to take and eat both. I like the Black Buck better than Venison, and I like venison alot. The Ram had decent flavor but was very stringy and chewy. Next Ram I will donate the meat to HFTH.

FRANKIE2000I have had blackbuck many times. It is not bad at all. I would put in on about the same level as whitetail, but I am going to have to agree with DesertRam though if I was looking for meet I would much rather have a axis and day. A doe axis will give you much more meat and it will be about the best thing that you have ever eaten in you life. In my opinion axis is about the best wild meat you will ever find.
