Given its proximity to Hwange National Park, the Matetsi hunting area is well known for both buffalo and elephant. And it is a true bonus that Victoria Falls is less than a couple of hours away by asphalt and hard-pack roads.

I hunted Matetsi Unit 4 back in September 2008 with Mark DeWet Safaris and had a spectacular safari. We saw abundant elephant (the largest being in the 45-50 pound range; no tuskless) and a herd of over 200 cape buffalo. Matetsi 4 uses Geoff Broome's old farm house, which is nicely perched on a bluff overlooking the concession. Spike camps can be established along the game routes meandering out of the Hwange. Importantly, agreements with neighboring Matetsi units allow hunters to cross-over (upon request) in the event that fires or the like have moved the herds into adjacent concessions.

When booking your Matetsi safari, be careful: it's my understanding that at least one of the Matetsi units is owned by individuals linked to Mugabe thereby placing that concession on the prohibited list by US Department of State.

Here are some photos from our Matetsi Unit 4 safari: Matetsi Unit 4 Safari Photos
