Heard about this a few days ago but now have confirmed that all safari clients hunting in Zambia this year will need to pay their trophy fees up front. What trophy fees you do not use will be reimbursed at safari's end at least by the DuPlooy's who we deal with. The worst part of this is that you have to choose the animals you want to hunt before you even get on the ground in Zambia. My best advise would be to pay for everything you even think is a remote possibility of being of interest to you. You CANNOT change your mind once your safari license is bought and it is bought well before your safari. You also need to get with your safari operator to discuss what animals you really can expect to take on your safari.

This comes from ZAWA and it seems that it will only effect the '07 season.

I took to calling Zambia the Yo-Yo safari country years ago because they would be up and down on issues. This buy license in advance for an animal is one of the things they did before the creation of ZAWA.

Well, I guess if you don't like it you can wait, it is bound to change. Wink

Jim,

It is the full trophy fee not just the license fee like it used to be.

It's sure a reason I haven't been back in about 30 years. It was no big deal back then when fees were not high, but now with fees where they are at, no deal here, but there is always someone with money to spare that will do it.

I wonder if this rule still holds if ZAWA strips your outfitter's concession away from him and deports him before you get there?

ES,

As far as I know ranches being private property are not effected.

ES /

ZAWA being the governing body controlling hunting and wildlife within Zambia are the ones whom (set the rules) and YES they do tend to change regulations quite often and sometimes without too much consultation.

It is becoming incresingly difficult for some GMA concession outfitters at times, and what Mark says may well be correct. I personally dont know for sure myself but I can try and find out if that is of general interest.

Although we personally do fall under ZAWA'S (general wildlife rules) being a bona fide wholly owned and operated Private Ranch, we in fact do have personal control over the species we offer for hunting based upon our own conservation and game management criteria, the only exception being species such as Leopard for which we generally only get a couple of CITES permits on quota per season, all other species bieng cape buffalo and plains game are managed entirely at our own discreation

Cheers, Peter

I don't know every detail but it seems that somehow this all spawned from the Leopard Ridge situation.

Just to be clear none of this makes me any less enthusiastic about hunting in Zambia. It just is one of those thngs that makes African hunting exciting. Every country does it different and like I said this should only be for the '07 season.

Right now, I'm glad to be booked for a hunt in Zambia in 2008 and not 2007. Is my memory correct that the Zambian currency is on a fixed exchange rate? This seems like a good way to get screwed on exchange rates and handling fees. I assume this is an attempted cash grab, and I'll bet it will backfire. Never mind that it will put some people off when it comes to selecting a hunting destination, I'll bet people will spend less when when they do go. No more "I wasn't hunting for it but figured I'd never get another chance at one so I took the shot and sorted it out with the wife and banker once I got home." If this system is still in place when I go, I will knock a couple of animals off my wish list just to protect my self a bit from the inevitable shrinkage that will occur with the prepaid trophy fees and likely end up spending less in the country than I otherwise would have.

Cheers,
Dean

Dean,

There is no exchange rate problem as in our case we will hold all the TF money for the DuPlooys. At safari's end we reimburse the clients if they have not shot everything. The TF money doesn't go to Zambia until after the safari. We ask for a TF deposit before the hunt anytway so in actual practice the process will be almost the same for our clients.
