I see Federal is now producing a new caliber suitable for general African hunting. Called the 370 Sako, it uses a 286 grain Barnes .366 diam. solid or soft at 2,550 fps. It is unbelted and will fit in an 06 action. Now I can have a battery of a 270, 370 and 470 to cover all my African hunting needs. That intrigues me!

I suppose it's like chaning all the street names here in SA it's still a street just called something else. animal

BTW is the case diameters exactly the same as the 9.3x66 ?

My understanding is that they just changed the name to make it more marketable in the US. You should confirm this for yourself.

Here is an excerpt from an article:

quote:
Almost unheard of in this country is the relatively new 9.3x66. This cartridge uses the .30-06 case necked up to 9.3mm, so on the surface it is similar to the old 9.3x62. However, the case is slightly longer and has a relatively short .275-inch neck, so it has greater case capacity than the 9.3x62mm. The Finnish gunmaking firm of Sako came to Federal and asked it to develop an American load for the 9.3x66. Enter the .370 Sako Magnum, introduced by Federal in its Federal Premium line. It is a 9.3mm using .366-inch bullets. Case dimensions are identical to the 9.3x66. There the similarity stops. Federal used its High Energy propellant technology to substantially increase the velocity—a 286-grain bullet at 2,550 fps yielding 4,129 ft-lbs of muzzle energy.

One of our members here is close to or may have achieved an interesting battery - 202, 303,404,505 and 606.

I think that's a good one and if you are into firepower you should see the two big boys, really good.

465 H&H:

I have been very interested in the 370 Sako a/k/a 9.3X66. It is really close to the .375 H&H and meets the minimum energy requirements for hunting dangerouw gamae all in a 30-06 length action. It is the cartridge that I wish Ruger had given us rather than the .375 Ruger. The only problem is that brass is really hard to get. I don't think Sako has any plans right now to supply us with brass.

It is still not a 375h&h that is the minimum for dangerous game in SA and a lot of other destinations

With the 9,3x62 and the 9,3x64 around, this is like reinventing the wheel.... Roll Eyes

Just an insignificant more velocity than the 9,3x62.. bewildered

I think Lorenzo is right, these firearms mfgs run out of things to sell so just reinvent or come up with all those new shorts and ultra shorts. My bet would be that 20 years none of those new shorts will be around. Think of how many new rifles were sold just because.

As Steve knows....I prefer the classics...375, 450/400, 404, 425 WR, 450 NE, 500 Jeff and the like. But the "new classics" ain't so bad either...500/416...very good round.

Rudi,

Is it the minimum; calibre wise or kilojoules?

Boddington gave it a big rap in the March 2009 G&A.......as he would. But some of his points are well made. 5 in the mag, great velocity with the high energy powders as loaded by Federal and lower recoil than a 375, in a bloody well made rifle........... thumb

With the 9.3 X 62 being a true classic, it's no problem in having another good 9.3 (66)available out there in an equal as good of rifle. No different that the score of 30 caliburs available in multi different forms. I for one like the idea of the 9.3 X 66 or Sako 370 if you will.

I think that if we change the name of the 9,3x62 Mauser to something like The 360 Alaskan it will be a great success in the american market Big Grin

And then we will have the :

360 Remington Magnum, then the Ultra Magnum, the 360 Wichester Short Magnum, and so on.... Big Grin

Sorry Larry, I just couldn't resist. From what I read in the american hunting magazines it seems that americans hunters love those names!!!
