I will be leaving in late April for my first safari, which my lovely wife "bought" for me! I will be taking my Model 70 .375 H&H to hunt plains game; wildebeest, kudu, gemsbok, impala, springbok, warthog, and zebra are my wish list. Now, this .375 has been a headache from day one in the accuracy department, but I believe I have finally ironed out the culprit to the problem. A long throat that likes the bullets close. This makes my rifle a bolt action single shot using "spitzer" type bullets. Now I have gotten good accuracy with the Hornady 300 gr RN and gotten that accuracy at the traditional seating depth... duh, its a round nose! So, does anyone have any experience with this bullet on plains game? It looks as if I don't shoot a RN, I shoot a single shot... I have worked up a load with the 300 gr Partition, but like I said; gotta load 'em one at a time... FIre Support Team

I seem to remember that Terry Blauwkemp had lots of good to say about Hornady's for his and wife's guns. Do a search?

Okay so lets think about this... A 300 grn bullet, .375 with an SD of .305 leaving your bbl at nominal 2500 fps right in the middle of its performnace envelope... It is going to be just fine. Sight in for 2" high at 100 yds, put the vertical cross hair where the the leg meets the body, hold 1/3 rd of the way up...squeeze...and then go take pictures... Mike Legistine actu? What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Trapdoor, What type of accuracy do you get with 300gr Nosler Partitions seated so they feed through the magazine? I once had a friend who was fussy about the accuracy of his rifle [a 308]. We took 2 differeent loads, one Federal Match, shot under one inch at 100 yards, and military ball which shot about 2 to 2 1/2 inch because of occasional flyer. I had him shoot from field positions with both loads. I loaded the rifle so he did not know which load he was shooting. There was very little difference in the group sizes. Shoot both loads from field positions and let us know the results. Still if you have more confidence in the Round nose bullets they will work fine. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

why not load the hornaday in the chamber and fill the mag with round nose bullets in times when one needs a rifle, he tends to need it very badly.....PHC

Very soft !! I have shot some game that weigh's 140 odd pounds and with rear end shots the bullet I recovered only weighed 80 odd greains. Try the woodleigh 350 gr RN for extra length and you should still get the magic 2400 fps

For RSA Plains Game, I gotta disagree with you. He should shoot max. 300 gr bullets- in fact, I'd go further and say that he should shoot longer .270gr Barnes TSX bullets, which if they shoot accurately, will give him better trajectory, less recoil and more than ample penetration on PG. Do a little experimenting now, or settle on the 300gr. RNs that you are using- either way, you'll be all set!

Use what shoots best and that apparantly is the Hornady RN,,you won't be shooting over 300 yards max and probably not that... BTW there is no such thing as bullet failure on plainsgame with 300 gr. bullets at 2500 or 2600 FPS.... The current .375" 300gr Hornady RN Interlock is being phased-out as we speak... The new/improved Interbond is due to arrive on the shelves any day according to MidwayUSA. This bonded core bullet should be an improvement over the Interlock as it should hold together better under extreme impacts and retain it's weight. My Ruger RSM shoots the Hornady very well and you can't beat the price of the Hornady RN either. Now that it will be of bonded core design that should eliminate most concerns over whether it might be too "soft" a bullet on really large animals. .22 LR Ruger M77/22 30-06 Ruger M77/MkII .375 H&H Ruger RSM
