Suggestions For Short Notice Safari Late May/June

My stepson is graduating college in May. We had thought we would go to Tanzania in late August but the young man has landed a job starting early July.
I have hunted extensively in North America but a newbie to Africa. I know a lot of hunts were booked last month at DSC, SCI, AND Wild Sheep.
We are looking for a quality hunting experience with a reputable PH in a non fenced free-range concession. Due to his schedule we are probably limited to 10 days of actual hunting. We have a good budget so hunt costs are not a major consideration, but it being his first major hunt ,success is really important.
Animals of most interest to us would be Sable, Kudu, possibly Buffalo, Zebra, antelope.
It is imperative to be in a game rich area where wildlife viewings would be commonplace daily. We are also hoping to hunt a area that the bush is not so thick this time of year it allows somewhat clear open areas.
Thanks in advance, also please feel free to PM me if you feel more comfortable with a private message.

Sir:

Check out Jan du Plessis with Sebra Safaris. Sebra Safaris

I know he has a window open the last three weeks of June. Plus he's offering a 25% discount on the daily rates for bookings confirmed by 1 Apr. You two would be the only clients on the property the entire time. You'll each have private room and private bath in bungalow.

No buffalo but mountain zebra instead of the common plains zebra and great gemsbok and a number of other antelope species. Can offer a day trip up to Etosha National Park too.

A good number on this site have hunted there, some, like myself, multiple times.

I've got a copy of his price sheet and can help you get there and back.

I would not recommend the above in Namibia based on your criteria...
I would be looking at Zambia HARD..it meets all your criteria with Sable and Buff being at the top. Of course, June could be an issue but I bet Fairgame (Andrew) will likely be opening here soon and I would listen..
He and Thor have top notch areas that meet your criteria in spades..

I would see if Mokore Safaris (the Duckworths) have any openings. Amazing density of game on both Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

I'm with Marty on this one, it would have to be Mozambique if you want a Sable, but the Save is very game rich as well. You are already aware of part of your problem will be finding somewhere that isn't so thick this early in the year. Most likely you would see more game in both areas later in the year but go when you can. There may be other places in Zim you can get a Buff and Sable also. Zambia would be a great option also if you want to kill a huge sable but will be much more expensive for that particular animal for sure, likely quota will be sold for prime area's.

I'd reach out to Jamy Traut Safaris and Brent Hein at the Bubye Valley Conservancy to see if they have space.

As noted this is early season and the grass will still be fairly green. Animals are still pretty dispersed this time of year and the hunting is not easy in free range areas. However it does make for exciting Buffalo hunting.

If I had a "good hunting budget" my first (and second) inquiry would be to Andrew Baldry at Royal Kafue, particularly if sable and buffalo were high on the list (and they would be.)

Respectfully, I would reconsider the unfenced condition for these species at this time of year. Sable are expensive, and hard to find in any open concessions, anywhere. On the other hand, Sable are plentiful and surprisingly affordable at any one of a number of South African fenced properties.

You will also need to decide whether you really want a buffalo. For the daily rate will be 2x if you put that species on your list. If you don't really plan to shoot buffalo, you should book a plains game hunt. Although putting Sable on the list will usually bump the daily rate as well, in most areas.

Given the "game-rich" qualifier, I come back to South Africa as the practical choice in this case.

Sounds like an excellent trip in the works. You and your stepson are going to have a blast.
But beware, this is going to be like putting a drug in your veins. Might as well just start planning the second safari now!
Oh, and you should put buffalo on the list for sure. Just no question whatsoever.

If I were in your shoes, I'd start my inquiries with:

Zimbabwe: Duckworths at Mokore and the Whittalls- Guy Whittall posted above
Zambia: Royal Kafue, I'd inquire with Andrew Baldry and Thor Kirchner

I'd ask each for a thorough description of what hunting early will be like. I think that those guys would all give you the information you need to make a decision.

I think you are spot on wanting to hunt in big, wild areas. This is the Africa that is shrinking fast.

Please let us know what you decide to do!

Indeed, many good outfits have been highlighted above. For a buff/sable safari I would also point to Mozambique for the unfenced option, I hunted with Mark Haldane's Zambeze Delta Safaris in Coutadas 11 and 12 if memory serves me correctly and saw numerous buff and sable, along with many different species in abundance. Took many excellent trophies. A link to my report: http://forums.accuratereloadin...043/m/2441061181/p/1

Based on the time you have, don't rule out quality fenced hunting. Fenced options would be our own Charl Van Rooyen of Infinito Safaris in the RSA. Good hunter, excellent areas.

I would also check with Michelle Buchanan of Buchanan hunts. She is booking hunts in many locations now and could advise you on where to go depending on your "want list" and the priorities on that list. Rich Tabor does a lot of their hunts now and I have hunted with him twice and would not hesitate to do so again.

Many great suggestions here and pm’s. Thanks to all so far! Still exploring options.
My main concern is one that I brought up initially. Being a early season hunt the bush and grass are going to be very thick. Also the roads are probably going to be a issue in most areas since the outfitter has not had a chance to get them repaired fron the rainy season. Still open to new ideas.

4WD, I second the endorsement for Charl at Infinito Safaris. Big properties, great accommodations/food and top notch trophies. You will have the time of your life! Please post a trip report when you get back.

I can definitely recommend Zambia and Royal Kafue or the Luangwa Valley at this time of year. Tall green grass and exciting hunting.

There have been some very good suggestions here and I’m sure you’ll find a hunt to suit you.

I am surprised nobody (at least publicly) has suggested a hunt in Matetsi. Very good sable, lots of buffalo, good kudu, and quite a bit of other plains game. Plus, it’s dangerous game country with elephant, lion and leopard all with healthy populations. Finally, it’s a good early season destination.

Cheers mate and the rains are poor this year and will be burning in April. Lots of Buff around at the moment. Good for Lions eh?

4WD I can offer you a hunt a with Justus Brits in north central Namibia that would work with your schedule. Justus has nearly 1 million acres of fair chase hunting on low fenced cattle areas. His father in law is probably the largest cattle farmer in the country and the native game on those farms is impressive. This is a one time offer based on the early dates but I would offer you a 10 day hunt with eland, gemsbok and impala included as starters for $3850.00. Since the areas do have cattle and since there is a country wide drought seeing game won't be a problem and the water point hunting will be awesome. Justus does have a 25 square mile enclosure with high end game such as sable, roan, nyala, red lechwe and tessebe priced reasonably.
As a 2nd offer I can offer plains game in Zimbabwe at Matetsi Block 5 arguably Zims finest safari area and loaded with plains game. You can do a buffalo there and expect to see tons of ele, some lion etc. and the roads should be fine by that time. I am Martin Pieter's USA Office and the PHS available there would be Chap Esterhuizen or Dalton Tink. Plains game Price 2x1 would be $550 a day per person with reasonable priced trophies.
in closing I also have Chete Safari Area on Lake KAriba, hunting along the shoreline would be excellent this time of year it would still be warm with game watering heavily plus the lake is low making visibility great. The bush would be thick but roads would be good and when combining the shoreline hunting with walking to the springs results would be very good. $450 per day 2x1 per person. Mike Blignaut PH

Tons of references and ask about any of these guys here on AR you'll get an earful! I am American and I stand behind each and every hunt I Sell 100%. the only real issue is if you want a buffalo contact Sean Scott at TheSafariConnection.com ScottOutdoors@hotmail.com or PM me here!! I posted this publicly (wanted to see what the reaction would be!) and sent you a PM. see buffalo pictures from Martins current on going hunt below.
