Have you hunted Grysbok on purpose, as part of a safari or a quest for the Tiny Ten? Pictures of a big one? Comments on hunting them?
THanks

I've been trying to take one on 5 safari's, this past year I did number 6,

1st evening of hunting I took this one - - - -

1 3/4 inch horns! Wow! Was I ever happy! And a huge one at that!

Than on Day 5, evening, My PH spotted another little guy. All he said to me was "Shoot that Bull!" I did - - -

Almost 3 inch horns! And yes I have to admit it, I did a little dance!

I was hunting for small cats and antelope, night hunting with a spotlight. So yes I was hunting for them.
Used a .223 for both.

I would like to, but haven't yet. And I'm not 100% sure they will be in the area where I'll be hunting this July.. I know they are found in the general region, but I'll have to see if they occur on the propery I'll be hunting. If they indeed are, I just might have to go out one night with them in mind.. I think they are a beautiful little antelope..

Have carried shotgun in truck at night for years but the one time last trip when I saw one stopped I didn't have the shotgun. It's the only one I've ever seen standing still within shotgun range. He WAS pretty.

I took one that went 1.75" with my .416 in 2001. As you can tell by the choice of weaponry, we weren't looking for Grysbok in particular. Big Grin

Best,

John

I was sucessful on Cape Grysbok in 2001 down in the Eastern Cape. I got him the second night out looking for him. measured 3 2/8 each side good SCI ranking 21st. I shot him with 338 WM with 225 gr solid. Oh yea I was happy and proud. I got him on the Kukuyu property where I also got my Blue Duiker and Cape Bushbuck. Cool

I wasn't hunting one on purpose, but we spotted one going full tilt and followed him up. Ran into a herd of eland which ran off.

Decisions?

Why to follow?

Decisions?

Mmmmmm. Tough choice?

Somehow the eland won out (of course) and after five kilometres and jogging after them, tracking and stalking shot a nice 35 inch eland bull.

Funny they sort of look alike. Smiler

THe reason I ask the question is that I am contemplating a trip for the Tiny Ten. Where would you start such an expedition?
Thanks

Hello dogcat

I am leaving on a hunt for the small antelope’s end of this month. In South Africa I will be hunting the Natal Red Duiker, Blue Duiker and Cape Grysbok; I will also hunt for Bushpig.

I will then go to Namibia for Damara Dik Dik and try for a larger Klipi.

Will write a detailed report when I get back.

Regards
Aziz

I took mine while hunting elephant in the Zambezi Valley, Dande South to be exact, in 2004. While I was not on a quest specifically for grysbok, I let Buzz Charlton know one was on my "most wanted" list. Day three of the safari served up this guy and one shot with a 410 grain Woodleigh solid from my .416 Rigby and I was halfway through the "tiny ten"! Five more to go!

I agree that the place to start your quest for these tiny antelope is in the RSA. Blue, Red and common Duiker can be found there...as well as steenbok, klippie, oribi, Cape grysbok and suni...you will have to move around but you can really enjoy the varied ecosystems these little fellows live in!

On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died.

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch...
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

dogcat,

I don't know where you live, but such a trip would start at home, then to the regional airtoprt, then to JFK or Atlanta and eventually Johannesburg. From there, who knows? I could put you up to a few of the tiny 10 quite easily, and some more to boot.

Let me know more about your intentions and plans.

In good hunting.

As I didn't have an eland yet, it was my first choice out of the two. Never worked out where the trophy will fit though, need to build a bigger trophy room. Grysbok would fit anywhere. Smiler

The grysbok was the very first animal I shot in Africa.

On the first day of my buffalo hunt (Zambezi Valley, Zim) we had tracked/stalked buffalo all day but did not connect. Driving out on the afternoon hunt, we spotted a grysbok. My PH encouraged me to take it and I made a lucky shot with my 375H&H at about 50 yards.
