Was watching "Hatari!" the other night and it occurred to me that I have never heard of whether the "Duke" ever hunted Africa...anybody know if he did and if so, how it went? Just curious...

I seem to remember reading that he shot an elephant with the 458 for Hatari but it was decided not show it in the picture and instead show the scene where he shoots over the elephants head.

My wife and I did our first Africa hunt with Jan Oelofse in 19 (Mumble). Jan has used the picture above with John Wayne on his fold-out brochure for 15 years anyway. It is now on the website.

We hunted with PH Steve Tors, son of Ivan Tors who did a lot of Hollywood work. Steve visited Africa with his Dad, and as soon as he was old enough left to become a PH in Africa.

We are going to return to hunt with Jan's outfit and Steve in '05 as an anniversary.

I don't have any details about what the Duke carried, but like someone said, Roy Weatherby presented him with several rifles. The Model 70s, I don't know.
