I am sorry you felt my post was aimed at you as this was not the case. I respect your right to think what you will about Capstick. What I do not like is people spreading these outlandish rumors(Capstick was a barkeep in a "white hunter hangout", ect.)

My quote was from the AUDIO tape "African Campfires".

I have learned PHC actually was a Professional Hunter. I didn't know that. I thought it was more of his "story".

Also that he may have participated in some form or other in elephant cropping. Personally I think his ele numbers were closer to 4 than the 800.

I have learned he was a gentleman and a friendly man. I think this shines through in his books etc.

[Big Grin] I remember when a big five hunt cost A$300 a day, and plains game was A$125 a day). And black rhino trophy fees were $1,000.

I knew he was an excellent read and his books were good value.

So who is going to one day write PHC's biography (if someone hasn't already) and if they do, can they tell it actually as it was? I hope so. I think that book would also be good value.

Nitro, this is not to, or about you prsonally. I simply used part of your post as a basis for mine, as it seems to cover most of what I consider to be misconceptions about PHC!

It seems there are a lot of folks who did not know he was a PH, though I have no idea why, it has always been common knowledge. It is also quite commonly known that PHC was a nice guy, and a gentelman. Even a short conversation with him would have made that evident. Unfortunately, I'm old enough as well to remember, also, when one could get a mixed bag license that would allow you to take 30, 0r 40 animals for $300 US, and the daily fees in Tanyaneka, and Kenya were $75 US per day. But what everyone fails to post is, at that time I made $1.10 per hour, when most were working for $0.75 per Hr, and I had a very good job! Finally, I would love to have a BIO of PHC, and I would like to have the facts as they were, but wouldn't there always be those who simply cannot accept the fact that things may, very well, be as stated, and point an accusetory finger at the facts they absolutely do not know about, one way, or another!

I would dearly love to write a BIO of PHC, but just like most here, if not all, I don't have the facts, and like most here, can only guess. Though I knew him only casually, he came accross to me as a man I could share a camp with. As Ray says, why not simply give the man the benefit of the doubt? I have talked to many of the people he hunted with, and to a man, they gave no bad press. The worse thing I have heard said about him was that he liked a glass of cane & coke
on occasion, and sometimes a few glasses! If that is a draw back, I think we could elliminate most of the hunters, and PHs I've come in contact with.

In closeing, till there is hard evidence, that PHC lied, I'll exercise my right to believe him, and everyone else can do as they please! [Cool]

MacD37,

Well said. I doubt we'll have another of his ilk
pass this way anytime soon. Stature is as strange
an entity as life itself. What we choose to believe and what may be actual fact is not as important as how we use these beliefs. PHC brought
incredible enjoyment to many. Some will only experience Africa through his eyes and the eyes of others. They will have a much richer life thanks to PHC and others that passed before him.

I spent many an hour hunting the long grass with PHC. I've lost track of all the elephants, lion, buffalo and leopard we hunted together. He often seemed to worry about running into the black mamba or rouge hippo much more than necesary though. But what an entertaining gentleman he was. I was deeply sadden by his death and really felt that I had lost a good friend and companion. But when the cold winter nights roll around, we will hunt together again, the way we always have, me setting in my recliner and Peter providing the excitement of those great hunts.

John,
My post was not directed at you nor ment to insult anyone. If it did then please accept my profound apolgy..and I was not aware of any tape, only his books wherein he stated that he was in on the killing of over 800 Elephants.

Again, I had no intention of flaming nor insulting you or anyone else..Sometimes I type faster than I think.... and punch that add reply without much thought.

Atkinson:

Your another gentelman who's hand I would enjoy shaking.

Takes a very large man to admit to a very small mistake.

Great post to Nitro Espress.

Thanks and no problems. I feeling a bit of deja vu on this one again.

You are not the only one to fly off without thinking. My post was guilty of that too.

I guess the problem is that there are slightly different accounts in different books and products.

Now the real question is whom can we interest in writing a biography on the man?
