Cheetahs Wreak Havoc New Era (Windhoek) July 23, 2004 Posted to the web July 23, 2004 Utaara Hoveka Windhoek ABOUT fifteen cheetahs are said to be causing a great deal of damage to farmers in the Okotjituuo and Okamatapati communal reserves in the Otjozondjupa Region. Vice-chairman of the Okotjituuo Conservancy Kapenauarue Katjiveri told New Era that the wild animals killed five cattle, and about ten calves at Okaruikondera, Oenda, Okarongo, Okambumbu, Bethlahem, Erindi Reje, and Otjitaazu. Officials of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism offices at Okakarara were not successful in their attempts to capture the animals, as they were nowhere to be seen upon their arrival. Katjiveri is of the opinion that the animals may have come from idle land between Tsumkwe, Gam and the Okotjituuo and Otjinene reserves. Approached for comment, Chief Warden at the Environment and Tourism office at Okakarara Piet Burger said he had been away on leave, and was not aware of the incident. His assistant was also not available for comment, as he was out on official duties.

I'm suspicious of this story. It's hard for me to believe that Cheetahs killed a grown cow, much less five grown cows. Maybe there are Lion in the area or the locals have some small weak cattle.
